Sunriver, OR (My Sportsbook) - Brad Bryant managed only an even-par 72 on Friday, but it was enough to keep the lead midway through the Jeld-Wen Tradition.
Bryant, gunning for his second major, finished two rounds at Crosswater Club at 10-under 134 to hold off a hard-charging Fred Funk by a shot.
Funk, the defending champion, fired a five-under 67 and moved into second place at nine-under 135.
Loren Roberts (71), John Cook (67) and Larry Mize (67) shared third place at eight-under 136, while Lonnie Nielsen (67), Mike Reid (67) and Eduardo Romero (68) were another stroke further back at 137.
Bryant, a four-time Champions Tour winner, claimed his only major at the 2007 U.S. Senior Open.
He took the second-round lead for the fourth time on tour -- but the first time in a 72-hole tournament.
"Wasn't as good as yesterday," said Bryant, who opened with a 62 on Thursday to break the course record and tie the 18-hole tournament scoring mark. "I played pretty well, but didn't get anything out of it."
While he rolled in putts from all over the course in the first round, Bryant couldn't get much to drop in the second. It took him eight holes to make his first birdie, on a 12-foot putt, but he gave that stroke back with a bogey at the par-five 12th.
Bryant, 54, birdied the 15th hole, knocking a chip shot to tap-in range, but surrendered another shot with a bogey at the par-five 16th, where he took a three-putt.
"The thing today that was a killer for me was that I played the par-fives in two-over," said Bryant. "I had a few bad bounces today [but] I had a lot of good ones yesterday."
Funk, who is chasing his second straight major after winning the U.S. Senior Open on Aug. 2, collected six birdies against just one bogey. He said he is "playing very patient and just letting it happen."
"My mental attitude is very good now and I'm maximizing my opportunities," said Funk, a five-time Champions Tour and eight-time PGA Tour winner. "Hopefully [I] make less mistakes than the other guys."
Battling a sore knee, Funk rolled in two 25-foot birdie putts on Friday. But he was happiest with a two-putt par at the 18th, where he had found some trouble.
"Very good to end the day" that way, Funk said.
