Wilford's TD lifts Dolphins over Jaguars

Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - Chad Henne's 33-yard touchdown throw to Ernest Wilford in the third quarter was the difference, as the Miami Dolphins topped the Jacksonville Jaguars, 12-9, in both teams' preseason opener.

Henne's throw was the only touchdown of the game, as the teams filled the scoreboard with field goals.

Miami's Dan Carpenter drilled a 48-yarder in the first quarter, while Connor Barth connected from 27 yards out in the second. Jacksonville's Josh Scobee made two field goals of 43 yards and one from 36 yards away to account for all of the Jaguars' scoring.

One of Scobee's 43-yarders came midway through the third stanza, handing Jacksonville a 9-6 edge. But Miami quickly responded getting a 41-yard kick return from Chris Williams. A 15-yard facemask penalty on Scobee set the Dolphins up at the Jaguars' 46, and on the third play of the drive Henne found Wilford with a short pass to the left. Wilford then took it to the end zone to put Miami on top for good.

Henne, heading into his second NFL season, completed 7-of-11 throws for 94 yards, with the TD and one interception. He took over quarterbacking duties in the second quarter, after starter Chad Pennington was under center during the first and threw for 38 yards on 4-for-7 passing.

Pennington led Miami to a stunning turnaround last season, their first under Tony Sparano, going from 1-15 to 11-5 to match the 1999 Indianapolis Colts (3-13 to 13-3) for the greatest rebound in NFL annals. The Dolphins captured the AFC East for the first time since 2000 and were in the playoffs for the first time since 2001 before bowing out with a loss to Baltimore on Wild Card weekend.

Pat White, a second-round selection out of West Virginia, was shaky in his debut, completing 2-of-7 passes for 14 yards and an interception. He also ran six times for 20 yards.

Like Pennington, Jacksonville's starting quarterback, David Garrard, saw action in the first quarter. He had 22 yards on 4-of-7 throws for the Jaguars, who went in the opposite direction of Miami last season.

After going 11-5 in 2007, Jacksonville was struck by injuries in '08 and plummeted to 5-11.

Veteran Todd Bouman led the Jags with 130 yards on 10-of-18 completions, while Troy Williamson hauled in four catches for 74 yards.

Game Notes

Torry Holt, who joined Jacksonville in the offseason after spending the entirety of his 10-year NFL career with St. Louis, made one catch for 10 yards...Dolphins rookie receiver Patrick Turner, a third-round selection in 2009, had three catches for 33 yards...Jacksonville rookie running back Josh Vaughan, an undrafted free agent in 2009, had 28 yards on seven carries.
