Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - Maria Sharapova was an easy winner in first- round action on Monday at the $2 million Rogers Cup.
In the last match of the night, Russia's Sharapova defeated compatriot Nadia Petrova, the 10th-seed, 6-3, 6-4 on the hardcourts at Rexall Centre. It was the third time this season Sharapova has defeated Petrova.
Fourteenth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska erased Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 6-3, while an upset came when Italian veteran Francesca Schiavone doused 15th-seeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. An additional upset on Monday came when Alona Bondarenko of the Ukraine downed 13th-seeded Marion Bartoli of France 6-4, 6-3.
Surging Aussie Samantha Stosur held off Canadian qualifier Heidi El Tabakh 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4), while Hungarian Agnes Szavay subdued Canadian wild card Valerie Tetreault 6-2, 6-4 and Aravane Rezai handled fellow Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-4, 7-5 to set-up a second-rounder against top-ranked Dinara Safina. Stosur will face French Open champ Svetlana Kuznetsova in her next outing
Additional opening-round wins came for Austrian Sybille Bammer, Japan's Ai Sugiyama, Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, Italian qualifier Roberta Vinci and Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko, who will meet Wimbledon runner-up Venus Williams in the round of 32.
The aforementioned Safina bested Dominika Cibulkova in last year's Rogers Cup finale, in Montreal. This U.S. Open tune-up shifts between Toronto and Montreal each year.
This week's top seed Safina was last week's Cincinnati runner-up to U.S. Open runner-up Jelena Jankovic. Safina is the reigning French Open and Aussie Open runner-up.
This week's field also features Wimbledon, Aussie Open and U.S. Open champion Serena Williams, Jankovic and former world No. 1 Kim Clijsters, who entered the draw as a wild card.
