Gustavo Chacin continued his dominance over Eastern League pitching, tossing seven innings of no-hit ball to lead the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 4-0 blanking of the Bowie Baysox. Chacin struck out seven and walked two to raise his record to 13-2. Chacin's 13 wins is tops in the Eastern League. Jordan DeJong earned his ninth save, tossing 1 2/3rd scoreless innings. Aaron Hill knocked in two runs in the win. Leadoff hitter Tyrell Godwin went 2-for-4 and scored three runs for the Fisher Cats. Chris Piersoll took the loss and fell to 1-5. Piersoll allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits in five innings of work. James Lofton, Eli Whiteside, and Kris Wilken had a hit each for Bowie, who managed just three hits on the day. New Hampshire improved to 64-47, and are tied with Binghamton atop the Northern Division. Bowie fell to 57-55, and sit ten games back in the Southern Division.
COLBY JACKED-UP
Colby Miller tossed eight strong innings of shutout ball, while Kevin West roped a solo home run, propelling the New Britain Rock Cats to a 1-0 win over the Norwich Navigators. West's home run came in the fourth inning, and was his 22nd bomb of the year. Miller improved to 3-5 with the win. He allowed just four hits, walked three and struck out three. Bobby Korecky picked up his 19th save, striking out two in the ninth inning. Brion Treadway was saddled with the loss despite another solid outing for Norwich. He allowed just the homer to West, and four hits overall, in seven innings of work. Treadway fell to 1-1. With the win, the Rock Cats improved to 52-58, while the Navigators dropped to 58-52
PHILLIPS CLIPS INDY'S FEATHERS
Andy Phillips knocked in four runs and homered twice while Jeff Deardorff plated two as the Columbus Clippers defeated the Indianapolis Indians, 8-6, in International League action Thursday night. Columbus upped its record to 57-53 while Indianapolis fell to 47-65. Phillips got the Clippers on the board early with a solo shot, 19th of the season, in the bottom of the first and then added a two-run long ball, his 20th, in the bottom of the seventh that tied the score at 6-6. Deardorff's RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the winning run. Dioner Navarro went 2-for-4 with two runs for Columbus. Juan Padilla (1-0) tossed a perfect inning out of the bullpen and picked up the win. Bret Prinz pitched a scoreless ninth inning and held on for the second save of the season. Indianapolis' Todd Erdos suffered the loss and fell to 0-5. Erdos surrendered four runs on three hits and walked one over 2 1/3rd innings of work. Jeff Liefer went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI while Matt Erickson scored a run and knocked in another for the Indians.
THE 'CUSE IS IN THE HOUSE
Gabe Gross knocked in four runs and scored three more while Julius Matos plated three as the Syracuse SkyChiefs beat the Ottawa Lynx, 13-8, in the International League Thursday night. Syracuse upped its record to 50-63 while Ottawa fell to 51-61. Gross got the SkyChiefs on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run double that plated Anton French and Russ Adams and finished the night 3-for-4. Matos went 2-for-5 a double and scored a run. French scored three times, collected three hits and knocked in a run for Syracuse. Bob File picked up the win out of the bullpen and upped his record to 2-0. File tossed 1 2/3rd perfect innings and struck out one. Ottawa's Mark DiFelice took the loss and fell to 7-4. DiFelice gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits and walked two in his 3 1/3rd innings of service. Chad Mottola hit his 15th home run of the season and Edwards Guzman chipped in with three hits including two doubles and knocked in two for the Lynx.
SOMEBODY BURNT THE BISCUITS
Travis Wilson collected three hits and three RBI as the Chattanooga Lookouts cooked the Montgomery Biscuits, 12-3, in a Southern League game Thursday night. With its second straight win, Chattanooga improved to 25-12 in the second half of the Southern League season while Montgomery, which has lost three straight, fell to 15-24. Wilson went 3-for-4, drove in three runs and scored a run to lead the Lookouts, who also got two RBI from both Bobby Darula and Edwin Encarnacion. The support benefited Scott MacRae, who notched his first victory. He allowed three runs and four hits in five innings. Losing pitcher Jose Diaz (0-1) was touched for five runs and three hits in 2 1/3rd innings. Chattanooga and Montgomery are scheduled to play again Friday.
EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD MALDONADO
Carlos Maldonado ripped a two-run, game- winning double as the Birmingham Barons rallied to beat the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, 8-7, in a Southern League West Division game Thursday night. With its second consecutive win, Birmingham improved to 23-15 in the second half of the Southern League season while West Tenn, losers of two straight, fell to 17-21. After West Tenn plated five runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 7-5 lead, Birmingham scored three runs in the bottom frame with Maldonado knocking the decisive two-run double. Despite giving up one run on two hits in one inning, Brian McNichol (7-1) was the winning pitcher. Losing pitcher Jermaine Van Buren was touched for three runs on three hits and recorded just two outs. West Tenn and Birmingham are scheduled to play again Friday night.
JUSTIN DA DRILLER
Justin Hampson was stellar for eight innings as the Tulsa Drillers pounded the Wichita Wranglers, 12-1, in a Texas League East Division game Thursday night. Having won three straight, Tulsa improved to 23-18 while Wichita tumbled to 24-17. Hampson surrendered just one run and two hits and struck out four in eight innings to earn the victory. His record for the season is 9-5 and his ERA checks in at 3.54. Hampson was supported by Danny Sandoval, who went 4- for-5 with three RBI, and Jeff Baker, who chipped in a double, home run and three RBI. Losing pitcher Thad Markray (1-4) was touched for five runs on four hits in 2 2/3rd innings. Tulsa and Wichita are scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday.
BATS BLINDED BY THE SUNS
Timothy Hutting went 4-for-6, falling a home run shy of the cycle, and drove in five runs to pace the Hagerstown attack, as the Suns destroyed the Greensboro Bats, 16-1. Travis Ishikawa had three hits, including his 14th home run, and drove in four runs in the rout. Ryan Sadowski allowed a run on four hits and struck out eight in six innings to pick up the win. He improved to 2-7. Sean Martin was dominant in three innings of relief to pick up his first save. Martin struck out six without yielding a walk or a hit. Evan Greusel dropped to 1-5 with the loss. He allowed six runs, five earned, on ten hits in 5 2/3rd innings to absorb the loss. Ryan Bear hit a solo home run to account for the Greensboro run.
RAPTORS OUTLAST ROCKIES
Lucas May, Travis Denker, and B.J. Richmond all hit home runs, while every Ogden Raptor scored at least a run in a 16-13 win over the Casper Rockies. Denker and Richmond each knocked in three runs. Cory Dunlop and Chris Westervelt each knocked in a pair in the win. David Parker picked up the victory to improve to 4-1, despite allowing four runs on six hits in three innings of work. Shane Lindsey took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on one hit and three walks in 2/3rds of an inning. Dustin Hahn had a huge night in the loss, with a triple, home run, and six RBI. The win snapped a 4- game losing streak for the Raptors.
