Mason, OH (My Sportsbook) - Jelena Jankovic of Serbia claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dinara Safina of Russia in the final of Western & Southern Financial Group Open.
The 24-year-old Jankovic, who won for the second time this season and 11th in her career, collected a first prize of $350,000. The young Serb also won the clay court event in Marbella in April.
"(A) good win for me," Jankovic said. "I'm happy that I'm back. I'm back in the, you know, in this group of players, and hopefully I can keep my form up."
Jankovic, the fifth seed in the tournament, advanced to the final match with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2), 0-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Russian Elena Dementieva that took 2 hours and 46 minutes.
Jankovic improved to 3-3 lifetime versus Safina with their previous matchup coming in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, which Safina won 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
"I think I was a bit off today," Safina said. "Basically, I would say it was not my day today. (The) few moments I was starting to get into the match, and she was, of course, using some good shots and hitting very close to the lines and down the lines. She played some great tennis today."
Safina, the world's top-ranked player, was vying for her 13th career title. She needed a mere 56 minutes to claim a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Italy's Flavia Pennetta in the semifinal.
