Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky looked sharp running the offense, as the
Houston Texans held on to beat the
Kansas City Chiefs, 16-10, in the preseason opener for both clubs.
Schaub played the entire first quarter, completing a perfect 7-of-7 passes for 70 yards. Ex-Lion Orlovsky connected on 9-of-20 passes for 121 yards.
Chris Brown ran for 25 yards and a score on six carries. Brown also caught two passes for 22 yards for the Texans, who finished third in the AFC South last season with an 8-8 record. Ryan Moats rushed for 52 yards on 10 carries.
Matt Cassel, who played into the second quarter, completed just 2-of-5 passes for 15 yards in his Kansas City debut after being acquired from New England in the offseason. Brodie Croyle completed 12-of-18 passes for 145 yards, and Tyler Thigpen connected on 7-of-14 passes for 40 yards, a touchdown and a interception. Thigpen also had 31 rushing yards on three carries for the Chiefs, who finished a dismal 2-14 last season.
Dantrell Savage rushed for 39 yards on eight carries for the Chiefs, who were playing their first game under new head coach Todd Haley, who presided over one of the league's most prolific offenses with the Arizona Cardinals over the past two years.
Brown's two-yard TD run with about seven minutes left in the first period was the only score during the initial 15 minutes.
Kris Brown drilled a 23- and a 42-yard field goal in the second stanza before Ryan Succop hit a 47-yard field goal just before halftime to make it a 13-3 game.
Kris Brown's 30-yarder was the only scoring in the third quarter.
Thigpen hit Brad Cottam with a one-yard TD pass with about 5 1/2 minutes left in the fourth to cap the scoring.
