East Rutherford, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Red Bull New York, which has lost five in a row, 10 of its last 11, and is winless in 12 straight, has had two weeks off from MLS play to regroup for the last nine games of the season.
The defending Western Conference champions are easily the worst team in MLS - and are making an argument for one of the worst teams in the league's history - and striker Juan Pablo Angel said "the mood is pretty bad and the confidence is low because of the number of games we have lost."
New York (2-15-4) last won in early May against the San Jose Earthquakes, but starts a five-game homestand against another team on a five-game losing streak - Chivas USA (8-7-3) - on Saturday at Giants Stadium.
"Things have to change," said Angel, who is questionable for this week's match with a concussion. "There are so many things we are not doing right."
The Red Bulls have picked up nine of their MLS-low 10 points at home, posting a 2-4-3 record.
New York has been horrible for nearly three months, though, scoring just seven goals while allowing 26 during the 12-game slide.
Even if the Red Bulls won their final nine matches, they would accumulate just two more points than last season when they grabbed the final playoff berth.
New York is in position to start a run and at least end the season on a strong note but midfielder Jorge Rojas joins Angel as questionable and midfielder Mac Kandji and defender Carlos Mendes are both ruled out. In addition, midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic is suspended.
Chivas USA (8-7-3) started the season 7-1-1, but has gone 1-6-2 since. Chivas has lost six of its last seven and has just one win in its last nine - making this weekend's match a battle of the two MLS teams in the poorest form.
Chivas continues to hindered with injuries, with Ante Razov and Lawson Vaughn among seven players out. Also, Paulo Nagamura, Kevin Harmse and goalie Zach Thornton are likely to be match-time decisions. Shavar Thomas compounded the problems with a one-game suspension he will serve against New York.
The Goats dropped their last match to the Colorado Rapids 4-0 (New York's last MLS match was also a 4-0 loss to Colorado) but coach Preki insists the team is still in good enough shape to turn the season around.
"We still have 12 games to go. We're not panicking. I know we're in some type of slump, but we still have two games in hand against most teams, and some three," said Preki, who helps his team can end a record 320-minute scoreless streak. "So our destiny is still in our hands."
