Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - If your hard-earned money was on Michael Vick wearing the midnight green of the
Philadelphia Eagles, well, then you just made yourself a substantial wad of midnight green.
The Eagles were far from the favorite to retain Vick's services, not least because they had publicly said they weren't interested in the shamed former Pro Bowl quarterback.
Green Bay, Baltimore, Carolina, even Pittsburgh seemed to be more likely destinations for Vick, and the paper-thin QB depth charts in all of those places were what made each of the above sites plausible.
But Philly?
The Eagles seemed to be stocked with backups - and let's be clear, Vick is currently a backup after spending two years away from the game - with former second-round pick Kevin Kolb still waiting patiently for his close-up and A.J. Feeley ranking as one of the most experienced clipboard holders in the game.
That's why, when Kolb suffered a sprained MCL in practice earlier this week, not many folks batted an eye. Feeley was still around, after all, and Kolb's injury wasn't supposed to be all that serious anyway.
But even if Kolb was done for the year, anyone who knows the ways of the Philadelphia Eagles wouldn't find the team's interest in Vick to be all that logical.
Remember how Donovan McNabb handled perceived competition by Jeff Garcia back in 2006, when McNabb wasn't even available to play? Remember how he handled being benched for one half of one game in favor of Kolb last season?
No, McNabb didn't throw a hissy fit in the middle of the Eagles' NovaCare complex, but he wasn't John Q. Supportive either.
How's he going to react after he strings together a couple of bad starts, or even a couple of bad drives, and Eagles fans are chanting Vick's name?
Chances are it will develop into another episode of The Young and the Restless, and since the whole T.O. debacle, it sure seemed like Andy Reid and team president Joe Banner had an interest in steering clear of such drama.
Speaking of which, how is the Birds' notoriously vocal fan base going to react to the Vick signing, which has to be making jaws drop from Grays Ferry to Levittown?
Expect them to react like any team's fans would have reacted, other than perhaps supporters of the Atlanta Falcons.
There are some in the area who don't like Vick for the obvious character reasons, and some who don't like Vick for the obvious football reasons, but in the end, they'll circle the wagons and root for anyone who wears their colors and has a chance of helping them get to the Super Bowl.
And that way of thinking is going to prompt a lot of calls to get Vick on the field in a "Slash" type role, a role that Vick would be smart to embrace if the team lets him. It is certainly his athleticism that intrigued the Eagles, not his highly suspect ability to run the west-coast offense.
Whatever role the Eagles envision for Vick will likely be revealed in the coming days and weeks, as the deposed hero tries to work himself back into football shape and rehabilitate his image as both a player and person.
It's difficult to say at this moment how it will play out, but if the beginning of this second chapter in Vick's career is any indication, there are some major surprises in store.
