Berlin, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has decided against making a comeback with Ferrari to replace injured driver Felipe Massa for the remainder of the 2009 season.
Schumacher, in a statement on his personal web site, said neck injuries from racing motorcycles earlier this year will prevent him from again going behind the wheel in a sport he dominated for more than a decade.
"The consequences of the injuries caused by the bike accident in February, fractures in the area of head and neck, unfortunately have turned out to be still too severe," Schumacher said. "That is why my neck cannot stand the extreme stresses caused by Formula One yet."
Schumacher, who retired after the 2006 season, had begun testing in an effort to replace Massa. The Brazilian driver suffered head injuries, including a fractured skull, after a crash during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix last month.
"Unfortunately I'm not able to step in for Felipe," Schumacher stated. "I really tried everything to make that temporary comeback possible, however, much to my regret it didn't work out."
The 40-year-old German won F1 titles in 1994 and 1995, then captured a record five in a row from 2000-04. He also holds numerous other F1 records, including 91 career wins and 154 podium finishes.
"I am disappointed to the core," Schumacher added. "I am awfully sorry for the guys of Ferrari and for all the fans which crossed fingers for me. I can only repeat that I tried everything that was within my power. All I can do now is to keep my fingers crossed for the whole team for the coming races."
Schumacher drove for Ferrari from 1996 until his retirement in 2006.
