Wichita, KS (My Sportsbook) - Jhonattan Vegas posted a five-under 66 Saturday to maintain his two-stroke lead after three rounds of the Wichita Open.
Vegas, who will go for his first Nationwide Tour win on Sunday, completed 54 holes at 16-under-par 197
Chad Collins matched Vegas' 66 and is alone in second place at minus-14. It could come down to those two players as Dave Schultz and Blake Adams are three strokes back in third place at 11-under-par 202.
Schultz and Adams both carded four-under 67s Saturday on the North Course at Crestview Country Club.
Vegas, a tour rookie, got off to a flying start with a birdie on the first and an eagle on the par-five second. After four consecutive pars, Vegas moved to 15-under with a birdie on the par-four seventh.
However, Vegas stumbled to a double-bogey at the eighth after finding water with his tee shot at the par-three.
"You're going to hit bad shots, especially in this kind of wind," Vegas said of his double-bogey. "The one on eight, it was a totally horrible shot. I just kept telling myself that kind of stuff is going to happen. You've just got to keep making birdies and thinking positive."
After making birdie on the 11th, he dropped another stroke at the 13th. Vegas responded in fine fashion though. He carded three straight birdies from the 14th to jump to 16-under. Vegas parred the last two to end there.
"I really wanted a birdie on that last hole, but I'll take the par for sure," said Vegas, who could not get up and down for birdie from over the last green.
Collins had a steady, bogey-free round. He posted two birdies on the front nine and three on the back to end two back.
"I didn't look at the scoreboard once today," admitted Collins, who briefly shared the lead after his birdie on No. 14. "I love playing out here, but am definitely looking forward to getting back to the PGA Tour. If I do what I did today, hopefully it's good enough, a carbon copy of today's round would be great."
Chris Tidland (68) and Jonathan Fricke (70) share fifth at 10-under-par 203. Luke List (67) and Justin Hicks (71) are one stroke back at minus-nine.
