Donovan leads L.A. to rare win at New England

Foxborough, MA (My Sportsbook) - Landon Donovan scored his ninth goal of the season, helping the Los Angeles Galaxy post their first win at New England in a decade, 2-1 on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium over the Revolution.

Donovan moved into a tie for second on the MLS season scoring list, one behind reigning MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto of the Columbus Crew.

Jovan Kirovski also scored for Los Angeles (7-3-10), which improved its solid road record to 4-1-6. The Galaxy won for the fifth time in their last six and extended their unbeaten streak to six.

"We played very well," Donovan said. "We want to keep going and we want to get in the playoffs."

New England (6-6-6), in the second game of a six-match stretch including five homes games, lost for just the second time at home this season. The Revolution are winless in the first two at home after tying Toronto FC 1-1 last week.

Donovan was active from the start, forcing New England goalkeeper Matt Reis to make in the opening minute. New England's Kevin Alston answered with a chance in the 13th but was denied by L.A. goalie Josh Wicks and Reis again bailed out his defense by denying Eddie Lewis in the 18th.

Donovan didn't waste his next chance, unleashing a side volley off a horrible clearance by New England's Darrius Barnes just outside the penalty area to hit the upper-left corner with an unstoppable shot in the 21st.

"Sometimes when you shoot, those things happen," said Donovan, who initially wasn't going to take the shot.

New England had a chance to equalize less than 10 minutes later, but after a perfect give-and-go by Kheli Dube and Steve Ralston, Dube fired wide of the right post from six yards.

Los Angeles took complete control early after half when Eddie Lewis and Alan Gordon set up Kirovski, and he played the ball to himself with a slight touch, then hit a half-volley past Reis from 14 yards in the 52nd.

Kirovski nearly added his second goal in the 63rd but was denied, and L.A. was able to avoid a scare in the 78th when New England took a few shots during a scrum in the area - one that was cleared off the line - before David Beckham knocked the ball out of the box.

New England was handed a chance to escape with at least a point in the last 10 minutes when Kenny Mansally drew a foul just inside the area in the 82nd.

Ralston buried the PK to the right side, sneaking the ball past a diving Wicks and inside the right post for his sixth goal of the season.

Mansally wasted New England's best chance to earn the draw, firing high from a few yards out on an open look in the 88th. New England was without coach Steve Nicol, who was handed a two-game ban by MLS earlier Saturday after being sent off against Toronto.

Los Angeles will try to extend its unbeaten streak next Saturday when it hosts Seattle. New England is off until Aug. 20 when it visits Seattle.
