Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - U.S. coach Bob Bradley selected 17 players from the FIFA Confederations Cup roster Friday for next week's World Cup qualifier at Mexico.
The U.S., which is 0-22-1 all-time at Mexico, is currently second in the final CONCACAF qualifying group. The top three teams advance to the World Cup, while the fourth-place side plays a South American team in a play-in series.
"We are excited about the challenge and the opportunity. Mexico is a very good team and we are all aware of their great success playing in Mexico City," said Bradley. "Every game in qualifying is important, and this is a chance to gain further ground in the group.
"Our team continually tries to raise the bar, and certainly the chance to win for the first time in Mexico is a welcome opportunity."
Tim Howard, who earned the Golden Glove award as the Confederations Cup's best goalkeeper, highlights the roster. Howard is unbeaten in five matches against Mexico and has posted five shutouts in seven World Cup qualifying appearances.
Clint Dempsey, honored with the Bronze Ball as the third-best player in the Confederations Cup, and recent AC Milan signing Oguchi Onyewu were also called on by Bradley.
Nine players appeared in the United States' 2-0 win against Mexico on Feb. 11, including Michael Bradley, who scored both goals.
Chad Marshall and Stuart Holden are making their first appearance on a World Cup qualifying roster, both coming off solid performances during the USA's run in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup final - a 5-0 loss to Mexico last month.
Costa Rica leads the final group with 12 points, followed by the U.S. with 10. Mexico is in fourth, and in danger of facing the daunted playoff against South American opposition if it falters against the 12th-ranked U.S.
Following is the complete roster:
