Saratoga Springs, NY (My Sportsbook) - Quality Road, making his first start since winning the Florida Derby, overran five rivals to win Monday's $150,000 Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The victory puts the three-year-old colt in the mix for the $1 million Travers Stakes at the end of the month.
Owned by Edward Evans, Quality Road stalked the pace in the 6 1/2 furlong sprint that was being set Everyday Heroes and Custom for Carlos. Jockey John Velazquez had his colt on the outside around the final turn.
Quality Road, the 7-10 favorite, drew even with the leaders coming out of the turn and took the lead at the top of stretch. Making late runs down the stretch were Capt. Candyman Can and Captain Cherokee.
Quality Road, trained by Todd Pletcher, raced through the stretch and hit the wire 2 1/4-lengths to the good. Finishing second was Capt. Candyman Can with Captain Cherokee rallying for third.
Rounding out the order of finish was Custom for Carlos, Everyday Heroes and Cabaret Cowboy.
The time for the Amsterdam was 1:13.45 on a fast track. It establishes a new track and stakes record for 6 1/2 furlongs.
Quality Road returned $3.50, $2.40 and $2.20. Capt. Candyman Can paid $3.90 and $3.20, and Captain Cherokee paid $5.40 to show.
Quality Road won the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park in the spring and followed with a track record victory over highly regarded Dunkirk in the Florida Derby.
However, a quarter-crack in his right front hoof prevented the colt from competing in the Kentucky Derby. The training of Quality Road was transferred in June from trainer Jimmy Jerkens to Pletcher.
"He's coming off a layoff," Pletcher noted earlier. "He's sprinted well in the past. We hope to move forward off the race, and if things go according to plan he'll be on target for the Travers."
He is expected to face Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and Jim Dandy Stakes champ Kensei in the Travers on August 29.
Quality Road banks $90,000 with Monday's win to bring his career earnings to more than $700,000 with four wins in five starts.
