Saratoga Springs, NY (My Sportsbook) - Newly crowned Haskell Invitational champion Rachel Alexandra has been safely returned to her home base at Saratoga Race Course. The filly arrived at her barn and stall shortly before 9 A.M. (et) Monday morning.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, the top vote getter in the NTRA weekly poll ran past six colts in Sunday's $1.25 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park. She became just the second filly to win the race joining 1995 Eclipse Award winner Serena's Song.
"She spoiled us with all her races and yesterday was more of the same," Asmussen said. "To say you expect that race, is somewhat presumptuous. I very much want to enjoy what she just did and not think about (what comes) next. We're sitting here talking about a three-year-old filly. The thinking (with owner Jess Jackson) has been out of the box, that she didn't have to run just against fillies. She's eligible for a vast array of races and we'll nominate her."
According to Asmussen it is doubtful 'Rachel' will run in the $1 milion Travers for three-year-olds at Saratoga. Kensei, a stablemate of the filly, won the Jim Dandy Stakes on Sunday and is expected to be entered in the Travers.
"We'll see how much (the Haskell) took out of her," Asmussen indicated. "She's a very anxious horse. We'll see how she acts on the track. With 'Rachel' she is the topic of conversation all the time."
Prior to her six-length Haskell victory the three-year-old filly won the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park by 19 1/4-lengths. 'Rachel' won the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs by 20 1/4-lengths back in May.
Rachel Alexandra, who won the Preakness Stakes on May 16, has won eight straight starts and has 10 victories in 13 career races for $2,498,354.
She sits atop the latest NTRA Thoroughbred Poll. The filly received 15 first-place votes and 159 points, 15 more points than number-two Zenyatta.
Also coming to Saratoga on Monday is Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. The gelding is coming from Mountaineer Park where he was third in the West Virginia Derby to Soul Warrior on Saturday.
"We're really excited about coming to Saratoga," said Chip Woolley, trainer of Mine That Bird. "We think the 1 1/4 mile distance of the Travers will suit him much more (than the West Virginia Derby distance), and he should also get a much better set-up with a larger field likely."
