Del Mar, CA (My Sportsbook) - Informed caught pacesetter Mast Track late down the stretch to win Sunday's running of the $250,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. The victory means automatic entry into this year's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita Park.
The 7-10 post-time favorite in the eight-horse field was Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed, who was going after a second straight San Diego Handicap victory.
Setting the pace in the 1 1/16 mile race was five-year-old Mast Track with Temple City in second. Informed, ridden by Tyler Baze, and Well Armed battled for third up the backstretch.
As the field entered the far turn, Mast Track and jockey David Flores continued to set the pace. Temple City and Informed were to the outside as Well Armed began to back up.
Entering the stretch, Mast Track had a small lead over Informed with Temple City in third. Informed and Mast Track battled down the stretch to the wire.
Five-year-old Informed stuck his nose out at the wire to get the win over Mast Track. Finishing third was Song of Navarone followed by Temple City, Sangaree, Kelly Leak, Magnum and Well Armed.
The time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:41.91 on Del Mar's synthetic track.
The four-year-old filly Allicansayis Wow was scratched from the race Sunday morning.
Trained by Doug O'Neill, Informed picks up $150,000 with the win and ups his 2009 record to two wins in seven starts. In his career, the veteran thoroughbred has won six of 22 starts for more than $500,000.
Informed was coming off a sixth-place finish to Rail Trip in the Hollywood Gold Cup. His other win this year was in the Californian over Rail Trip at Hollywood Park.
Informed paid $15.00, $6.60 and $6.00. Mast Track returned $9.20 and $6.80, and Song of Navarone paid $8.20 to show.
The San Diego Handicap is the traditional local prep for the $1 million Pacific Classic.
