Santa Clara, CA (My Sportsbook) - The struggling San Jose Earthquakes host a Seattle Sounders FC club that is currently on a six-game unbeaten run on Sunday afternoon in Major League Soccer action.
San Jose (3-10-5) is currently in last place in the Western Conference table, and needs to start stringing together wins in a hurry or its season will be lost.
The Earthquakes are coming off a 2-2 tie vs. D.C. United last week that snapped a two-game losing streak and hopes to build on the momentum from the draw.
"It was a good fight-back by us," 'Quakes coach Frank Yallop said. "We're disappointed that we didn't get the three points ... but we showed great spirit to not let [the early goals] get us down, and I thought we could have won it in the end."
Midfielder Ramon Sanchez made his MLS debut in the match after joining the club at mid-week.
"I felt good out there but each game I play I will get more and more confident with the team," Yallop said. "We had a tough start but we started pressuring them more in the second half and we got more control of the game. This is a game we can build on."
The Sounders (7-3-8) are coming off a scoreless draw vs. Chicago and hope to get back in the win column against the hapless 'Quakes.
"I think right now the key for us is we've got to do a better job of finishing opportunities," Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said. "I think we've created opportunities when we played Chelsea a week ago, but that clinical finishing still has to happen for us. There's times when we over hold it, over pass and we need to finish better. There's been very few games, especially recently, where I felt that we haven't created enough chances or that the opponent has created more than us. So finishing is definitely the key."
While the team's scoring has been an issue recently, the defense has not, as the club has allowed just one goal in its last three games.
"Defensively our ability to hold the ball, our ability to balance people off offensively, we do a pretty good job of that," Schmid said. "I'm pretty pleased with most of what we've done. It's just a matter of when we dominant games, the key to the sport is when you dominate games you've got to score goals and when you get dominated not to give any goals up. We're doing a good job of not giving the goals up in the periods of time when we dominate, but we're not turning our domination into the goals that we need and that's what happened. If we get better at that, then we'll have even more success."
The Sounders will be without influential midfielder Freddie Ljungberg because of suspension, while defender Taylor Graham and midfielder Michael Fucito are out with injury.
The 'Quakes will be without defender Aaron Pitchkolan, while midfielder Arturo Alvarez is doubtful, midfielder Ramiro Corrales and forward Ryan Johnson are questionable, and defender Ryan Cochrane is probable, all with injuries.
