Bridgeview, IL (My Sportsbook) - Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis felt last week's 4-2 victory over FC Dallas was "the type of game that could change our season."
But Kreis also realized that "will be proven by what we do next week and over the coming weeks."
RSL (6-7-5), which is sixth in the Western Conference, rallied from a two-goal deficit for the impressive win over Dallas. Halftime substitute Yura Movsisyan scored two of Real's goals.
Real leaves the friendly confines of Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah this weekend to visit the Chicago Fire (7-3-8), who are second in the Eastern Conference.
RSL has thrived at home again this season, but has struggled on the road again and needs to carry last week's momentum to Toyota Park. Real is just 1-6-2 on the road, and has scored just five goals in those matches.
Oddly, Chicago has built its record mainly away from home, going 5-1-4 on the road and just 2-2-4 at home.
Kreis knows Real needs to get better results on the road if it is going to get into playoff contention. Real Salt Lake is just nine points behind the first- place Houston Dynamo in the West with 12 matches left.
Real Salt Lake signed Dutch winger Rachid El Khalifi to a three-year deal on Tuesday, adding another exciting option for its stretch run. In addition, the club welcomes back midfielder Kyle Beckerman from U.S. national team duty.
Chicago continued its road success last week, earning a 0-0 tie at the Seattle Sounders FC. Goalie Jon Busch made five saves, and was helped by the woodwork twice and two goal-line clearances, for his sixth shutout of the season.
"We knew it was going to be a battle today," Busch said. "They are a very good team and they play very well at home. This was a big advantage, the crowd and everything and the atmosphere.
"I did my job."
Chicago coach Dennis Hamlett said defense is the key to the team's success.
"If you come in with a mindset that you're going to defend and make it hard for the other team, you're going to give yourself a chance," Hamlett said.
"Our mindset on the road has been like that."
Chicago has also been stingy at home, allowing just eight goals in eight games but has also scored just seven times.
The Fire are still searching for answers with former U.S. star Brian McBride sidelined by shoulder surgery. McBride leads Chicago with six goals, and Marco Pappa is tied for second with five from the midfield.
Cuauhtemoc Blanco has also contributed four from midfield, but Chris Rolfe and Patrick Nyarko - who have three goals apiece - must produce more from up top to help the Fire balance out their squad.
