Celadna, Czech Republic (My Sportsbook) - Tano Goya fired a seven-under 65 Thursday to grab a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Moravia Silesia Open.
This is a new event on the European Tour and marks the tour's return to the Czech Republic after a 12-year absence.
John Bickerton and Steve Webster, both winners on the European Tour, posted six-under 66s to share second. Robert-Jan Derksen, Ignacio Garrido and Francois Delamontagne are one stroke back at five-under 67.
Goya, who won the Madeira Islands Open earlier this year, started his opening round on the 10th tee of the Old Course at Prosper Golf Resort. He got his round going with a birdie and posted another birdie on the 14th.
The Argentine holed an eagle effort on the par-five 16th and followed with birdies on 17 and 18 to make the turn six-under.
Around the turn, Goya stumbled to bogey on the par-four second. He atoned for that mistake with a birdie on the fourth. Goya grabbed the lead with a birdie on the par-four eighth to finish at seven-under.
"I'm very happy. I played really good," said the 21-year-old Goya. "When you play well and have a good round you are relieved in the first round. It is important to start on the right foot.
"I was always on the green for a birdie chance. I also putted well, that helped me do that round. If you aren't on the greens here with the slopes it is difficult to make and up and down. The key was hitting the greens."
Bickerton also started on the back nine and ran off three straight birdies from the 11th. After a par on 14, Bickerton then birdied the 15th to get to four-under.
The Englishman parred four in a row from the 16th before dropping a shot at the par-four second. Bickerton came back with a birdie on the fifth, then birdied his final two holes to share second place.
"It's been a while since I've played decently so it was nice to put a good round together," Bickerton admitted. "I shot 66 at the French Open recently, but not as comfortably as today. Fingers crossed it will continue."
Webster birdied two of his first four holes, then carded consecutive birdies from the seventh to move to minus-four. He birdied the 10th, but tripped to a bogey on the 13th. Webster fought back with birdies on 14 and 15 to get to six-under.
Jeppe Huldahl, the Wales Open winner, carded a four-under 68 to share seventh place with Jose Manuel Lara, Graeme Storm, Fabrizio Zanotti, Michael Lorenzo- Vera and Callum Macaulay.
