Rome, Italy (My Sportsbook) - American Ryan Lochte won the men's 200-meter individual medley Thursday, claiming one of seven world records set on Day 5 of the World Swim Championships.
The seven world records brought the number set at these championships to 29.
Lochte finished the 200m IM in one minute, 54.10 seconds to break the mark previously held by Michael Phelps, who swam a 1:54.23 at the Beijing Olympics last summer.
A pair of Australians also set records Thursday. In the women's 200-meter butterfly final, Jessicah Schipper touched the wall in 2:03.41, eclipsing the previous record of 2:04.14. China's Liu Zige also swam under the old world- record time, set by American Mary Descenza in a heat on Wednesday.
Additionally for Australia, Christian Sprenger set a record in the semifinals of the men's 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:07.31. American Eric Shanteau swam a 2:07.42 in the second heat, as both he and Sprenger recorded faster times than the previous world mark of 2:07.51, set by Japan's Kosuke Kitajima last June.
In the women's 200-meter breaststroke semis, Canadian Annamay Pierse just got under the world-record time of American Rebecca Soni by swimming a 2:20.12. Soni had set the record with a 2:20.22 in Beijing last summer.
Cesar Cielo Filho got Brazil's first gold medal at these championships, as well as a world record, by beating a stacked field in the men's 100-meter freestyle final. Filho cracked 47 seconds by finishing the race in 46.91, topping Eamon Sullivan's world-record time of 47.05 seconds.
Frenchman Alain Bernard, who at one point held the world record in the event, placed second in 47.12.
China won a pair of golds and set world records in the process Thursday. In the women's 50-meter backstroke, Zhao Jing set the record by winning with a time of 27.06 seconds. She broke the previous mark of 27.38, set by Russian Anastasia Zueva in Wednesday's semis. Zueva placed fourth in Thursday's final with a time of 27.31, and was one of four racers to swim under her day-old mark.
In the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay, China won with a world-record time of 7:42.08, shattering the old mark of 7:44.31. Australia set that time at the Beijing Olympics, but both China and second-placed USA (7:42.56) beat it Thursday.
