Rome, Italy (My Sportsbook) - A day after six world records were set on the first day of the 2009 FINA World Swim Championships, five more records fell in Rome on Monday, although American Aaron Peirsol failed to qualify for the 100- meter backstroke final.
Peirsol, the world record-holder in the event, finished a surprising ninth overall in the semifinals -- with a time of 53.22 seconds -- to miss the final by 0.1 seconds. The result came as a shock, after he won the event at the past two Olympics and set his world mark earlier this month, swimming a 51.94 in Indianapolis on July 8.
Michael Phelps qualified for the 200-meter freestyle final by finishing third in the semifinals with a time of 1:45.23. Phelps, who set the world record in the event when he posted a 1:42.96 in Beijing last year, finished third behind Germany's Paul Biedermann, who swam the distance in 1:43.65.
Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom, who set a world record Sunday in the 100-meter butterfly semifinals with a time of 56.44 seconds, broke her mark on Monday in the final with a 56.06 to capture the gold medal. Jessicah Schipper of Australia also topped Sjostrom's Sunday mark but finished second with a time of 56.23 seconds.
American Ariana Kukors matched Sjostrom's feat, winning the 200-meter individual medley final by topping the world record she set Sunday. In the semis, she swam a 2:07.03, but Monday posted a 2:06.15 to win the race. Australia's Stephanie Rice tied Kukors' Sunday mark to finish second.
One Australian did capture a gold medal on Monday, as Brenton Rickard set a world record in the men's 100-meter breaststroke final. Rickard swam the distance in 58.58 seconds to break Kosuke Kitajima's record of 58.91 seconds, set in the 2008 Olympics. The second place finisher, France's Hugues Duboscq, also topped the old mark with a 58.64, although he finished second.
The fourth final of the day came in the men's 50-meter butterfly, and Serbian Milorad Cavic captured the first-ever gold medal for his country with a time of 22.67 seconds. The time set a championship record.
The other two world records set Monday were both in semifinals.
America's Rebecca Soni, after setting the championship record in the 100-meter breaststroke earlier Monday, broke the world record with a time of 1:04.84, topping Leisel Jones' old mark of 1:05.09 from 2006.
Russian Anastasia Zueva broke a record in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 58.48 seconds, edging Great Britain's Gemma Spofforth, who also topped the old mark in the event after posting a 58.74. The previous record had been 58.77 seconds, set by Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry in the 2008 Olympics. Spofforth had set the championship record earlier Monday.
