Oakville, ON (My Sportsbook) - For the second straight day, Mother Nature was the big winner at the Canadian Open.
The first round was finally completed earlier Friday after a long weather delay Thursday. Once the second round got underway, more bad weather halted play Friday afternoon.
The second round resumed just after 7:00 p.m. (et), but lasted less than 30 minutes as more inclement conditions stopped play for the day. The round will resume Saturday at 7:30 a.m.
Jerry Kelly stood atop the leaderboard at 11-under par and he was through 15 holes of his second round. Due to the multiple weather stoppages, no one has completed two rounds.
Camilo Villegas and Kevin Na shared the lead after the first round at nine- under 63. Villegas is one-under through 15 holes and shares second place at minus-10.
He was joined there by Martin Laird (17 holes), Tim Herron (16 holes) and Nathan Green (12 holes).
Na has yet to start his second round at Glen Abbey Golf Club and he is tied for sixth at minus-nine with Bob Estes, who has played 13 holes.
Kelly, who collected his third tour win earlier this year, opened with birdies on one and two. He parred six straight from the third before making birdie on the ninth to turn in 10-under.
After three consecutive pars from the 10th, Kelly birdied the 13th, but gave that stroke right back as be bogeyed No. 14. Kelly regained the lead thanks to a six-foot birdie putt on 15 just before play was stopped for the day.
"I'm striking the ball better than I ever have," Kelly admitted. "And the putter is coming back again, so I'm ready to go play some golf."
Villegas started on the back nine and carded three birdies and two bogeys to turn in minus-10. On the front nine, he parred six in a row to trail by one.
Laird is in the first group that will complete its second round Saturday. He had an up-and-down round that included seven birdies and four bogeys through 17 holes. Laird had just converted a 24-foot birdie effort on the eighth before the horn blew to stop play.
Herron was bogey-free for his round. He started on the 10th and collected birdies on 15 and 16. On the front nine, Herron poured in three birdies in a four-hole span to jump to 10-under.
Green birdied his first four holes, but that run ended with a bogey on the fifth. He recovered that stroke with a birdie on the eighth. Green got within one of the lead thanks to birdies on 11 and 12.
Defending champion Chez Reavie has not started his second round. Reavie will need a good round as he stands at plus-one and the cut line is currently minus-two.
