Oakville, ON (My Sportsbook) - Kevin Na fired a nine-under-par 63 Thursday to take a two-shot lead with the first round of the Canadian Open suspended due to darkness.
The first round at Glen Abbey Golf Club had a seven-hour, 30-minute weather delay. There were 98 players on the course when play was halted, and there were many that had not even started their opening rounds.
The first round will resume Friday at 7:30 a.m. (et).
Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen opened with a seven-under 65 and he shares second place with Scott Verplank and Joe Durant.
Jimmy Walker, who finished 14 holes of the first round, is alone in fifth at minus-six.
Na played the back nine first, but did nearly all of his damage on the front nine. He parred six straight to start his round, then birdied 16 and 18 to turn in minus-two.
The 25-year-old dropped in birdies on one and two to move to four-under. After a pair of pars, Na birdied his final five holes to soar in to the lead.
His whole round turned for the better after an argument with his caddie on No. 11, his second hole. That is where Na was when play re-started.
"It all started on my first hole when I started after the delay on 11, which was my second hole," Na explained. "I pulled my tee shot into the trees and I didn't have a good lie in the rough, and I had to go over the creek.
"I told my caddie, I said, 'I think I can get over the tree.' He said, 'there's no way you can get over the tree.' We sat and argued for a couple minutes. I said, 'I can do it.' He said, 'no, you can't.' He rarely says you can't do something, so he made me pitch out, and I ended up making a 15-footer for par that kind of kept the round going. And after that I started to back down and started catching fire."
Goosen also started on the back nine. After an eagle on the par-five 13th, he birdied three in a row from the 16th to turn in minus-five. The South African birdie the second and seventh to gain a share of second.
Verplank also started on No. 10, but like Na, did most of his damage on the front nine. He carded eight pars and a single birdie on his first nine. Around the turn, Verplank birdie five of the first six holes to jump to six-under. He birdied the ninth to end at minus-seven.
Durant was the only player of the top four on the leaderboard to make a bogey on the day. He drained four birdies in a five-hole stretch from the 13th.
Around the turn, he birdied the fifth then carded a hole-in-one on the par- three seventh to move to seven-under. Verplank followed with a birdie on the eighth, but closed with a bogey on the ninth to share second.
Steve Elkington, Harrison Frazar, Frank Lickliter, Chris Riley, Jason Dufner, Kevin Sutherland, Patrick Sheehan and Dean Wilson are tied for sixth at four- under-par 68. They were joined there by Leif Olson (16 holes), Peter Tomasulo (15 holes) and Derek Fathauer (15 holes).
Defending champion Chez Reavie stumbled to a one-over 73 and is tied for 84th.
