Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - The United States men's national soccer team scored goals at the end of each half to earn a 2-0 victory over Honduras at Soldier Field in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals on Thursday night.
Clarence Goodson and Kenny Cooper scored the goals and Stuart Holden earned two assists to help the U.S. to the decisive victory. The American team has now scored 12 goals in the tournament by 10 different players. Cooper and fellow forward Brian Ching are the only players to score more than once.
The U.S. almost took an early 1-0 lead, just two minutes in when a Holden corner kick was headed just wide by defender Jay Heaps.
U.S. goalkeeper Troy Perkins made his only save of the half when he knocked the ball off the crossbar and over after a curling shot off the left foot of Marvin Chavez tested him in the 20th minute.
Honduras goalkeeper Donis Escobar made a number of strong saves the rest of the half before the U.S. finally broke through in the 45th minute.
After U.S. left winger Robbie Rogers' shot on goal was knocked out of bounds, drawing a corner kick, Holden fired a perfect service into the Honduras' area. Goodson snapped a header from the top of the six-yard box to bury the chance and ensure the Americans would go into the half up a goal.
The U.S. used the momentum from the late goal to dominate Honduras in the second half, peppering Escobar on a number of occasions, but the 'keeper came up big, keeping his team in the game until the closing minutes. Escobar made seven strong saves in the loss.
With the score still 1-0 U.S., Honduras almost equalized when second-half substitute Roger Espinoza played a beautiful ball into the area to midfielder Carlo Costly. But Perkins made the save in tight before the rebound was knocked away by the defense in the 84th minute.
Six minutes later the U.S. scored a brilliant goal to ensure the victory on a bing-bang-boom play. After breaking into the offensive third, the team pulled back and strung together a number of passes before catching Honduras out of position. The Americans capped off the buildup when Ching took a pass from midfielder Kyle Beckerman in the area. Ching then back-heeled to Holden, who played across the box, one-time, to Cooper, who easily tapped in for his second goal in the last two Gold Cup matches.
The U.S. will now play in the Gold Cup final on Sunday at Giants Stadium vs. the winner of the Mexico-Costa Rica semifinal.
