Ayrshire, Scotland (My Sportsbook) - Playing through trying conditions Friday, Tiger Woods managed just three birdies in his second round and missed the cut at the 138th British Open Championship.
Woods managed two late birdies, on 16 and 17, to shoot four-over 74. That put him at five-over-par 145 for two rounds.
"Problem after problem," Woods said after his round on Friday.
When Woods finished, there were 14 players on the course inside the cut line of plus-four and eight of them needed to fall over the number for Woods to make the cut.
That did not happen.
Since he turned professional, Woods has missed the cut just six times in his career on the PGA Tour and only twice in a major championship. His other missed cut in a major was at the 2006 U.S. Open.
The three-time champion parred his first six holes as the weather created changing conditions that went from dry to rainy and back to dry.
Woods knocked his third to the par-five seventh within three feet. He rolled that in to move to even-par. Woods found a greenside bunker on the eighth and that led to a bogey.
The world's No. 1 hit a poor drive on nine and that led to his second straight bogey. Another bad drive on 10 ended with a lost ball. His fourth came up short of the green before Woods got up and down for double-bogey.
That dropped him to plus-four, where he was on the cut line. The struggles continued though as Woods knocked his drive into a fairway bunker on the 12th.
Woods could only pitch out, then play his third to 25 feet. He two-putted for bogey, but there was more trouble on the horizon. His approach ran over the green on the 13th, then he hit a poor pitch shot. Woods rolled his par effort from off the green seven feet by the hole.
From there, Woods two-putted for a double-bogey which dropped him to seven- over par, three shots outside the cut line. Adding to his problems, Woods' group was put on the clock on the 13th hole for being out of position.
Woods steadied himself with pars on 14 and 15. Needing to play his final three holes in three-under, Woods responded with a birdie on 16. He knocked his second over the green on the par-five 17th, but chipped to three feet and knocked that in for birdie.
He headed to the last at plus-five, one stroke over the projected cut line. However, there were only four birdies made on the 18th to that point of the round.
Woods' drive found the right rough off the tee. His second shot from 199 yards out ran just over the back edge of the green. He chipped to three feet and tapped in for par.
"I kept making mistake after mistake," said Woods. "You can't make mistakes and expect to make the cut or win the championship. I didn't play a clean card.
"Obviously, it's disappointing. I was playing well coming in. I was hitting it well. Just a couple of bad three-woods."
After doing his post-round interview, Woods did not even stick around to see if he survived the cut. He knew he did not do enough and he was right as the cut fell at four-over-par 144.
