Ayrshire, Scotland (My Sportsbook) - Tiger Woods has a long way to go if he wants to collect his fourth claret jug this week.
Woods opened with a one-over 71 on Thursday.
"I certainly made a few mistakes out there today," admitted Woods. "I realistically probably could have shot about one- or two-under, but made a few mistakes and consequently I'm at one-over."
Woods got on the board with a birdie on No. 2, but gave that shot right back with a bogey on the third. He once again got into red figures with a birdie on the par-five seventh.
The world's No. 1 stumbled to a bogey on the 10th, but quickly atoned for that mistake with a birdie on 11th.
Woods stumbled down the stretch though. After a bogey on 15, he dropped another stroke at 16 after finding water with his second. He parred the final two, but is seven off the lead.
"I three-whiffed a hole from about 15 feet and didn't take advantage of 17, there you have it," Woods bluntly said about his round.
"You need to be patient out there. This golf course, you could shoot a good round today. That's what you could do with the wind down and some accessible pins."
MAJOR WINNERS LAG BEHIND
This year's major champions - Angel Cabrera and Lucas Glover - are both well off the pace after the first round of the 138th British Open Championship.
Cabrera, who claimed his second major title at Augusta, had to rally on the back nine to finish in red figures.
The Argentine opened with a birdie on the first, but he gave that shot back as he bogeyed the fifth. Cabrera birdied the par-five seventh to move to minus- one.
Around the turn, Cabrera stumbled to a double-bogey on the par-four 12th to fall to one-over par. He did manage to get those strokes back with birdies on 13 and 17 to end at minus-one, five strokes off the lead.
Glover earned his first major championship victory at the U.S. Open in June. He began his round with a birdie on the second, but a double-bogey on No. 3 put him over par and he remained there the rest of the round.
The 29-year-old faltered to another double-bogey on the par-three sixth. Glover recovered one stroke with a birdie on the par-five seventh, then parred seven straight from the eighth.
Glover dropped to four-over with a double-bogey at the 15th. He atoned for that error with birdies on 16 and 17 to get back to plus-two, which is where he ended after a par at the last.
* Miguel Angel Jimenez had never owned a share of the lead in a major after any round. His best previous finish in a major was a share of second at the 2000 U.S. Open Championship.
* Paul Broadhurst hit the first tee shot of the championship. However, it was his playing partner Mark Calcavecchia that made the most noise. Calcavecchia, the 1989 Open champion, carded a three-under 67 and is tied for 10th.
* Lee Trevino is the last player to win a PGA Tour event the week before the British Open. Trevino won the Canadian Open in 1971 the week before winning the Open Championship. Steve Stricker won last week's John Deere Classic. If he were to go on and win, Stricker would be the seventh person since 1949 to win the week before a major, then win the major as well. He shared fifth place after one round at minus-four.
* Tiger Woods opened with an over-par round for the sixth time in 14 British Open appearances. Of his 14 major championship titles, Woods only opened with a round over par three times, once in the other three majors.
* The par-five seventh ranked as the easiest hole Thursday as it played to an average 4.43.
* The most difficult hole Thursday was the par-four 16th, which played to an average of 4.32.
