Ocenaport, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Now that it has been determined that Preakness Stakes winner Rachel Alexandra will make her next start in the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park, plans are being made on her schedule up to the race.
"Depending on the weather, we'll ship in on Tuesday of race week," the filly's trainer Steve Asmussen said. "If everything goes to plan, we'll breeze her (at Saratoga) on Monday and ship on Tuesday. We'll continue to breeze her on Mondays up to the race."
The 1 1/8 mile Haskell will be Rachel Alexandra's first race versus male three-year-olds since her historic triumph in the Preakness. On May 16 she defeated Kentucky Derby champ Mine That Bird by one-length to become the first filly to win the race in 85 years.
In her most recent start, the three-year-old won the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park. She set a stakes record for the 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.33 and defeated Malibu Prayer by 19 1/4-lengths.
Owned by Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick, Rachel Alexandra won the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs by 20 1/4-lengths back in May.
"With her race in the Mother Goose at a mile and an eighth," Asmussen said, "this should suit her very well."
Rachel Alexandra has won seven straight starts and has nine victories in 12 career races for $1,798,354. She sits atop the latest NTRA Thoroughbred Poll. The filly received 10 first-place votes and 176 points, 10 more points than number-two Zenyatta.
Expected to take on the filly in the Haskell are Long Branch Stakes winner Atomic Rain, Arkansas Derby champ Papa Clem and Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird.
"Bringing the biggest names in sports and entertainment to the Garden State is what the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority is all about," said Dennis Robinson, president and CEO of the NJSEA, which owns and operates Monmouth Park. "Having a superstar of Rachel Alexandra's caliber in the starting gate for the Haskell only adds to the rich tradition of that race and will certainly bring national and international attention to Monmouth Park."
Also being considered for the $1 million race are Tom Fool Handicap winner Munnings along with Iowa Derby champ Duke of Mischief and his stablemate Big Drama, winner of the Red Legend Stakes.
