Nurburg, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Mark Webber overcame an early-race drive- through penalty to win Sunday's German Grand Prix and become a first-time winner in Formula One competition.
Webber, who won his first career F1 pole on Saturday, was penalized for running into Rubens Barrichello while Barrichello attempted to overtake him on the opening lap. He captured the lead after the second round of pit stops and dominated from there to record his first win in his 130th grand prix start.
"I lost Ruben completely off the start, and I thought he had gone a little bit to the left, so I went to the right and I banked into him," Webber said. "It's not normally my style. I got a drive-through for that, so I had to recover."
Webber, 32, set a record for making the most starts before his first win on the circuit. He also became the first Australian driver to win a grand prix since Alan Jones in 1981 at Las Vegas. Jack Brabham, a three-time World Champion, was the first Aussie to win an F1 event, the 1959 Monaco Grand Prix.
"It's an incredible day for me," Webber said. "I wanted to win so badly. After Silverstone (England), I thought I had a good chance there, but after yesterday's pole position, I knew I was in a good position to try and win the race today."
During the offseason, Webber suffered a broken leg in an accident during a charity event in Tasmania. He returned to the team for testing one month before the season began with steel rods in his leg.
Webber finished 9.252 seconds ahead of his teammate, Sebastian Vettel, to give Red Bull Racing a one-two finish for the second consecutive grand prix. Vettel picked up his second victory of the season, while Webber finished second in the British Grand Prix three weeks ago.
"I am very happy with the result," Vettel said. "In the end it was a good recovery. It was quite a bad start and the all the KERS cars got around me. I got passed by both McLaren cars and Felipe (Massa)."
Vettel raced in front of his home crowd at the 3.2-mile, 16-turn Nurburgring for the first time in his F1 career. The young German also gained on current World Championship leader Jenson Button, who finished fifth.
Button, from Brawn GP, has accumulated 68 points so far this season, compared to 47 for Vettel and 45.5 for Webber.
Ferrari's Felipe Massa recovered nicely from a slow start to finish third and post his first podium of the season. Massa finished one point behind Lewis Hamilton in last year's championship battle.
"I miss being in the top-three," Massa said. "It was a fantastic race, and we had a fantastic start."
Nico Rosberg, from Williams, finished fourth, while Barrichello came in sixth. Barrichello lost time on his second stop due to a refueling rig problem. He had to pit again later on for enough gas to carry him to the finish.
Hamilton, from McLaren, suffered another disastrous finish. He attempted to overtake Webber at the start, but suffered a punctured tire after making contact with Webber. The defending World Champion fell one lap behind for an 18th-place run.
"My race was effectively over at turn one," Hamilton said. "I think the flat tire had damaged the rear floor, and it felt like I was out there driving on ice."
Sebastien Bourdais became the first driver to retire after the Frenchman suffered mechanical problems. Bourdais finished 20th in what is rumored to be his last grand prix start with Toro Rosso.
Massa's teammate, Kimi Raikkonen, became the second driver out of the event when his engine expired just past the halfway point. Raikkonen finished 19th.
