Inglewood, CA (My Sportsbook) - Rail Trip, ridden by Jose Valdivia, Jr., took command at the top of the stretch and sailed to victory in Saturday's $700,000 Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park. The four-year-old gelding recorded his fourth win of the year out of six starts.

Rail Trip was 5-1 in the morning-line, but was sent off at 9-1 in the 13 horse field. Defending champ Mast Track was 14-1 and the 2-1 favorite was Parading. The lone filly in the field, Life Is Sweet, was sent off as the 3-1 second pick.

Setting the pace in the 1 1/4-mile race was Tres Borrachos, who opened a four- length lead on the field. Rail Trip was racing in second with Mast Track and Magnum vying for third.

Around the final turn Rail Trip drew even with Tres Borrachos and took the lead coming into the stretch. With none of the other horses gaining, Rail Trip increased his lead on the way to a three-length victory.

Tres Borrachos finished second followed by Life Is Sweet, Mast Track, Parading, Informed, Magnum, Global Hunter, Dakota Phone, Bullsbay, Song of Navarone, Big Booster and Autism Awareness.

The time for the 70th Hollywood Gold Cup was 2:00.75 on the all-weather surface.

Owned by Jay Em Ess Stable and trained by Ron Ellis, Rail Trip added $420,000 to his bankroll which now totals $667,790. This year alone he has earned $642,790 and notched his first graded stakes win.

Rail Trip won his first five career starts and was the favorite in all seven races.

The Gold Cup victory snapped a two race losing streak in which he finished second both times. Rail Trip was runner-up to Ball Four in Hollywood's Mervyn Leroy Handicap prior to the Californian loss to Informed. In April he led the entire way in winning the Santana Mile at Santa Anita.

Rail Trip paid $21.40, $10.60 and $6.20. Tres Borrachos returned $21.60 and $11.80, and Life is Sweet paid $4.00 to show.
