Toronto, Canada (My Sportsbook) - Dario Franchitti will start on the pole for Sunday's Honda Indy Toronto after topping the charts in qualifying on the streets of Toronto.
Franchitti lapped the 1.75-mile, 11-turn street course in one minute, 01.0249 seconds (103.532 m.p.h.). The Chip Ganassi Racing driver was .26 seconds quicker than Will Power, who's driving a third entry for Team Penske.
"The car was good out of the box," Franchitti said. "The lap that I did in the Fast Six, I came in afterwards and said basically, 'That's it. That was a hell of a lap. That was as good of a lap as I've driven around here'."
Franchitti captured his third pole of the season and the ninth of his IndyCar Series career. He also won the pole for CART/Champ Car events at Toronto from 1997-98.
Power, making his first start since the May 24 Indianapolis 500, was the only Penske driver to advance in the Fast Six final session.
"We're really happy to be second," Power said. "We would have been a lot happier with first, but second is great."
Graham Rahal and Justin Wilson, who won last Sunday at Watkins Glen, NY, will share row two, while Canadian Alex Tagliani and rookie Mike Conway will occupy the third row.
Robert Doornbos, another rookie, qualified seventh, and Scott Dixon, the current points leader, was surprisingly eighth.
"By all means I didn't try to run Helio (Castroneves) there, I was reacting to Tagliani, who kept sliding down in front of me," Dixon said. "You got to try and get a gap, so you can try and get a complete lap in."
Raphael Matos will start ninth, while Castroneves will roll off 10th.
"Towards the end, I lost at least three laps because of traffic, and it was a shame, because I didn't understand why people weren't lifting or just let you by," an upset Castroneves said after he was eliminated from round two.
Castroneves' Penske teammate Ryan Briscoe qualified 11th one week after taking the pole at Watkins Glen.
Dixon currently holds a 19-point lead over Briscoe and Franchitti.
All four drivers from Andretti Green Racing were knocked out after the first qualifying round. Marco Andretti qualified 17th, followed by Danica Patrick in 18th, Tony Kanaan 20th and Hideki Mutoh 22nd.
Kanaan spun midway through the first round. Mutoh tried to avoid him but slammed into the tire barrier. Mutoh's damaged front wing was repaired in time for him to complete the round.
Sunday's race is scheduled to start around 1:00 p.m. (et).
