Papa Clem using Long Branch for Haskell

Oceanport, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Saturday's $175,000 Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth Park has attracted a field of eight three-year-olds for the final prep race before next month's $1 million Haskell Invitational.

Topping the field in the 1 1/16 mile race is Arkansas Derby winner Papa Clem with jockey Elvis Trujillo. Trained by Gary Stute for Bo Hirsch, the colt will start from post five and is the expected favorite when the gates opens.

Papa Clem will make his first start in Saturday's Long Branch since a sixth place finish in the Preakness Stakes. He was fourth in the Kentucky Derby following the Arkansas Derby. Papa Clem began the year with two runners-up results, in the Robert B, Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita and the Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds.

The colt has earned $890,940 in eight career starts with two wins and two seconds.

Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito has a pair of colts owned by My Meadowview Farm in the Long Branch. Santana Six will break from the inside post with Chuck Lopez riding and Nowhere to Hide has drawn post seven with Carlos Marquez, Jr. in the saddle.

Santana Six is coming off a second place finish to Lord Justice in the Spend a Buck at Monmouth. He was seventh in the Derby Trial at Churchill Downs back in April. The colt has won two of five career starts for $64,970.

Nowhere to Hide began the year with three consecutive fourth place results in the Risen Star Stakes, Tampa Bay and Illinois Derbies. He was 17th in the Kentucky Derby and finished a distant fourth most recently at Belmont Park in an allowance race. The colt has winnings totalling $102,399 with one win in 10 lifetime starts.

Here is the complete field for the Long Branch in post position order: Santana Six, Atomic Rain, Despite the Odds, Omniscient, Papa Clem, Lord Justice, Nowhere to Hide and Rapid Redux.

Santana Six and Nowhere to Hide are coupled as an entry, and Atomic Rain and Rapid Redux are an entry.

Post-time for the Long Branch Stakes is scheduled for 4:50 p.m. (et).

Local favorite Musket Man, who was expected to run in the Haskell on August 2, has been put on the shelf for the remainder of the year. The colt, who was third in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, will miss the Haskell and the rest of the 2009 racing season with a bone bruise in his left front foot.

"It's nothing major," said trainer Derek Ryan. "We could run him in the Haskell, but that extra kick he gives in the stretch probably won't be there. It wouldn't be fair to him.

"Instead, he'll go to the Vinery in Ocala (Florida) where he'll get some rest for this year. We'll bring him back at Tampa next year and pick out five or six races for a four-year-old campaign. What those races will be, I'm not sure, it's way too early. Dubai could be a possibility. The main goal, with the Breeders' Cup at Churchill, is to get to the Classic."

With five wins and three seconds in eight career starts, Musket Man has earned $893,600 for owners Eric Fein and Vic Carlson.
