Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - The Miami-Florida Hurricanes claimed the top spot in the latest Bowl Championship Series standings, while Ohio State dropped to second.
Miami (9-0) has 3.69 total points and passed the Buckeyes by 1/100th of a point despite being idle this past Saturday. Ohio State (12-0) fell one spot after it narrowly escaped Illinois, winning 23-16 in overtime, and received 3.70 points.
Washington State (9-1) garnered 9.11 points, and Oklahoma (9-1) received 10.75 points as the two teams occupy the third and fourth spots respectively for the second straight week.
Georgia (10-1) moved up to fifth with 12.16 points after Texas lost to Texas Tech, and fell from the top five in the BCS.
Miami has three games left this season as it plays Pittsburgh this Thursday, at Syracuse on November 30, and home against Virginia Tech on December 7. Ohio State plays its final game of the season this Saturday at home against arch rival Michigan. If both teams win the remainder of their games, these two teams will meet for the national championship at the Fiesta Bowl on January 3 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.
Washington State which was idle this past Saturday, will host rival Washington on Saturday and finishes the season travelling to UCLA on December 7.
Oklahoma defeated Baylor 49-9 on Saturday and is slated to take on Texas Tech this week in Norman. The Sooners also have to play at Oklahoma State on November 30, and possibly the Big 12 Championship game on December 7 as well.
Georgia moved up one spot after it came from behind to defeat Auburn 24-21. The Bulldogs take on Georgia Tech on November 30.
Notre Dame (9-1) is sixth with 13.13 points, followed by Iowa (11-1) with 13.66 points, Southern California (8-2) with 15.54 points, Michigan (9-2) with 22.82 total points. Texas closed out the top 10 with 25.46 points.
Texas dropped five spots in the standings after it suffered its second defeat of the season losing to Texas Tech 42-38 on Saturday.
Kansas State, Florida State, Colorado, Florida, and Penn State round out the top 15 in the BCS standings.
The BCS standings are released each Monday during the season, and the final rankings will come out December 8.
The BCS standings consist of five major components: subjective polls of the writers and coaches, computer rankings, schedule strength, team record and quality wins. The margin of victory component in the computer polls that helped comprise the BCS rankings last year was eliminated.
The two teams that have the lowest point totals in the standings will play in the Fiesta Bowl.
Champions of six conferences -- the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, and SEC will qualify for a BCS game. Two at-large teams will also be selected.
The Hurricanes played Nebraska in the Rose Bowl in last year's title game. The BCS system received criticism because the Cornhuskers got into the championship contest despite losing to Colorado by 26 points in their final regular season game and not even playing in the Big 12 title game.
Even though it is highly unlikely that there will be a tie in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season, the commissioners did develop a tiebreaking plan. The first tiebreaker will be head-to-head results, followed by victory over the highest-ranked BCS team and best strength of schedule rating.
