Wilson cruises to victory at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen, NY (My Sportsbook) - Justin Wilson put on a dominating performance and easily held off Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon in the closing laps to win Sunday's Camping World GP at The Glen at Watkins Glen International and give Dale Coyne Racing its maiden victory in open-wheel competition.

Wilson, in his second year with Coyne, led 49 of 60 laps. A late-race incident involving Hideki Mutoh set up a six-lap sprint to the finish. Wilson easily pulled ahead of Briscoe and Dixon on the restart and then drove to a near five-second margin of victory.

The Sheffield, England native recorded his second career IndyCar Series victory, with his first coming in his rookie season last year at Bell Isle Park in Detroit.

"We've just worked at this all year, and we've put a lot of effort into road courses, and we knew that's were we are stronger, and to dominate like we did all day was just fantastic," Wilson said.

Wilson became the first non-Chip Ganassi Racing or Team Penske driver to win an IndyCar race since his victory at Detroit last August when he drove for Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing. Wilson made two attempts to pass leader Helio Castroneves, but race officials penalized Castroneves for blocking, which allowed Wilson to take the lead for good with 15 laps to go.

Coyne, competing in his 25th year of open-wheel racing as a driver and owner, picked up his first win in his 558th start.

"We've been working towards this, with some of the drivers we've put in the cars the last few years, we've been trying to get to this point," Coyne said.

Polesitter Ryan Briscoe fell back in the field when he made a pit stop before a mid-race caution, but the Penske driver rebounded for a second-place finish.

"It looked like when the tires got older, I had the advantage because I was trying to line (Wilson) up and pass him for the lead, but as soon as we got the yellow, the tires got cold and we saw a big difference in the compound."

Dixon finished third and grabbed the lead in the championship standings. The Ganassi driver and defending series champion now holds a 19-point advantage over Briscoe and teammate Dario Franchitti, who spun in the early going and fell one lap down for a 15th-place finish.

"We had an average car today, maybe not the best, but I think we had a little bit better of a car than Briscoe at the end," said Dixon, who won the first three races at Watkins Glen from 2005-07.

Castroneves and Marco Andretti rounded out the top-five.

Rookie Mike Conway finished sixth, followed by E.J. Viso, Tony Kanaan, Robert Doornbos, another rookie this year, and Dan Wheldon.

Ryan Hunter-Reay, the defending race winner, fell victim to an opening-lap accident when he was bumped in traffic and spun into the infield grass. Hunter-Reay finished last in the 21-car field.

"Everybody just stopped, and we were in fifth or sixth gear up the top of the hill," Hunter-Reay said. "I don't know what happened, some accordion effect."
