Millstone, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith was sentenced to 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving in a crash that killed his close friend two years ago.

The Newark Star-Ledger reports the 23-year-old Smith will spend 30 days in a Monmouth County jail. Judge Debra Gelson sentenced Smith to 90 days, but he'll likely only have to serve 30 of them because 60 days were suspended as long as he performs 500 hours of community service by visiting sick children in hospitals. He was also fined the maximum $506.

The accident took place on June 9, 2007. Smith, who jumped straight from St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, New Jersey to the NBA, was suspended for two games at the start of the 2007-08 season due to the crash.

"We are fully aware of the legal proceedings involving J.R. Smith today and the judges' decision," Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien said in a statement. "J.R. Smith took responsibility for his role in this tragic accident that occurred in June 2007. The legal statutes mandate that J.R. serve time for driving recklessly and he is grateful that the statutory sentence was reduced from 90 days to 30. We will continue to support J.R. during this difficult period and will have no further comment at this time."

Smith admitted to driving through a stop sign and hitting a car in the accident that killed 21-year-old Andre Bell. The collision threw Bell and Smith from the SUV as both were not wearing seat belts. Bell died due to head injuries, while Smith suffered a sprained left shoulder.

Smith was charged with reckless driving among other violations. According to the Star-Ledger, at the time of the accident Smith had 27 points and five suspensions on his driver's license. The newspaper reports between the accident and October 2008 Smith racked up two more speeding tickets and three more suspensions.
