Bridgeport, WV (My Sportsbook) - Tom Gillis only posted a two-under 70 on Sunday, but it was enough for him to earn his first Nationwide Tour victory at the Nationwide Tour Players Cup.
He finished at 15-under-par 273 and won by three strokes at Pete Dye Golf Club.
"This gives me a start to what I want to do and that's being in the top-25 and graduate back to the PGA Tour," said Gillis, who pocketed $108,000 and moved to 10th on the money list. "I wish we were done right now."
Cameron Percy and Roger Tambellini both shot rounds of four-under 68 and shared second at minus-12. Jonas Blixt managed a three-under 69 and came in fourth at 11-under 277.
Gillis got off to a spectacular start with two birdies in his first three holes, although he didn't birdie the par-five second. He bogeyed the par-three fourth, but a birdie at the par-five fifth gave him a three-stroke advantage over the field.
Gillis birdied the eighth and 10th holes to build a seemingly insurmountable lead.
Things fell apart a bit after that.
He bogeyed the par-four 11th and double-bogeyed the par-three 13th to trim his margin to two shots. He bounced right back with a birdie at 14 to go back ahead by three.
With several of his closest competitors falling, Gillis parred his last four holes to hang on for the victory.
"No matter what happened today, I thought I was going to win," said Gillis. "Even if I had given them all back, I felt like I would win. I never really stressed about it."
Chris Baryla and Ron Whittaker both shot 72s and shared fifth at minus-10.
Michael Putnam (68), Craig Barlow (72), Jeff Gove (75) and Kyle Reifers (75) tied for seventh at nine-under 279.
