Endicott, NY (My Sportsbook) - Fred Funk fired a seven-under 65 Saturday to grab a three-stroke lead after two rounds of the Dick's Sporting Goods Open.
Funk finished 36 holes at 15-under-par 129, breaking the old 36-hole scoring record of 130 that Eduardo Romero set last year en route to victory.
The first round was completed earlier Saturday after two weather delays Friday eventually caused play to be suspended for the night due to darkness.
Ronnie Black and Romero missed the course record by a single stroke Saturday as they both fired nine-under 63s to move into a share of second at minus-12. They were joined there by Lonnie Nielsen, who shot 66 in the second round at En-Joie Golf Course.
Funk led by two entering the second round and opened with birdies on one and two. After a pair of pars, Funk dropped in back-to-back birdie efforts from the fifth to move to 12-under, but his lead was still only two.
Romero birdied the first, then made eagle on the par-five third. After a birdie on five, Romero poured in three straight birdies from the seventh to jump to 10-under.
Funk rolled in a 12-footer for birdie on eight and followed with another birdie on No. 9. However, he couldn't pull away -- yet.
Romero birdied the 11th and 12th to keep pace, but the turning point came at 13. The Argentine stumbled to a bogey there and followed with another bogey on 14 and found himself five back after Funk birdied the 10th for his third straight birdie.
Funk tripped to a bogey on the par-four 13th to trim his lead over Black to two shots. Funk parred four in a row from the 14th before closing with a birdie on the 18th to finish three clear of the field.
Romero rebounded from his bogeys with birdies on 16 and 17 to share second at minus-12.
Black dropped in three birdies in a four-hole span from the second. He also birdied eight and nine to make the turn at minus-eight. On the back nine, he eagled the 12th and collected birdies on 13 and 18 to share second.
Nielsen would have had second by himself if not for a late bogey. He birdied the third, but didn't catch fire until the seventh. Nielsen birdied five of seven holes from the seventh, then birdied the 15th to move within one at minus-13.
However, he stumbled to a bogey on the par-three 17th to end three back.
Gary Hallberg carded a six-under 66 and is alone in fifth at 11-under-par 133. Jay Haas (68) is one shot back at minus-10.
Jeff Sluman (67), Mike Hulbert (68), Andy Bean (68) and Mike Goodes (65) share seventh at nine-under-par 135.
