Endicott, NY (My Sportsbook) - Fred Funk fired an eight-under 64 and held a two-shot lead Friday when the first round of the Dick's Sporting Goods Open was suspended due to darkness.
Jay Haas and Lonnie Nielsen shared second place at six-under 66 when the round was suspended, while Mike Hulbert was also at six-under with one hole remaining.
The round was delayed twice on Friday because of inclement weather, including 30 minutes at the start. A series of thunderstorms that moved into the area halted play again from 1:48 to 5:40 p.m. (et).
With 24 players still on the course and darkness setting in, the round was suspended for the night at 8:21 p.m. It will resume Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m.
Tom Kite, D.A. Weibring, Andy Bean and Gary Hallberg were in the clubhouse at five-under 67, with Jeff Roth also sitting at minus-five through 12 holes of his first round.
Jeff Sluman, Bart Bryant, Tom Jenkins, Joey Sindelar, Hal Sutton and Larry Mize were tied at four-under 68.
Funk made his only bogey of the round on the par-four second hole at En-Joie Golf Course, but went on to make nine birdies the rest of the way to finish two strokes off the 18-hole scoring record.
He birdied three holes in a row from the fourth to the sixth, then back-to- back holes to finish the front nine with an outward 33.
Funk went four-under on the back side as well, picking up consecutive birdies again at the 11th and 12th holes. He finished with birdies at the 15th and 18th for the clubhouse lead.
If Funk's lead stands -- and only Roth has a real chance to ruin it -- it will mark the first time since Turtle Bay in Jan. 2007 that the 53-year-old has held the 18-hole lead on the Champions Tour.
Funk, the eight-time PGA Tour winner, claimed his second Champions Tour victory at that event. He is 2-0 when holding the first-round lead on the over-50 circuit, where he has won four times since 2006.
