Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - Freddy Adu, who has yet to appear in the FIFA Confederations Cup, headlines the United States' Gold Cup roster, which was released by coach Bob Bradley on Thursday.
The United States advanced to the final of the Confederations Cup on Wednesday, ending No. 1 Spain's 15-game winning streak and 35-game unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win. Adu is with the club in South Africa, but has not appeared in any of the four games.
The U.S. plays either Brazil or South Africa in Sunday's final and the Gold Cup roster gathers just two days later in Seattle for training. The U.S. opens the tournament against Grenada on July 4, battles Honduras on July 8 in Washington, D.C., and ends group plays against Haiti on July 11 in Foxborough, Mass.
The U.S. is looking to become the second team to win three straight Gold Cups. The Americans have won four times since the tournament began in 1991, including three of the last four events. The U.S. is 21-0-1 all-time in group play.
Adu, who just turned 20 earlier this month, is one of 23 players on the roster, which includes 15 MLS players. Most of the players on the team in South Africa will not play in the Gold Cup. Only Adu, Charlie Davies, Heath Pearce and Luis Robles - who all play overseas - will stay with the team next month.
Defender Steve Cherundolo, who will return from injury in the Gold Cup, is the other most notable player on the roster. Cherundolo is the most capped player on the roster with 51 appearances. Overall there are just six players with more than 10 caps with the U.S.
Seven players, including Robles, will be looking to make their U.S. debut, and another nine have five or fewer caps. Five of the eight midfielders are looking for their first caps. Real Salt Lake' Kyle Beckerman is the most experienced in the middle as the only player to appear for a full 90 minutes for the U.S.
Colin Clark, Sam Cronin, Brad Evans, Stuart Holden and Logan Pause - all from the MLS - are the uncapped midfielders. Defender Jay Heaps is the other player searching for his first cap.
