Bloemfontein, South Africa (My Sportsbook) - The United States pulled off a huge upset on Wednesday in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup as they defeated Spain, the top-ranked team in the world, 2-0.
Jozy Altidore scored the opening goal in the 27th minute and Clint Dempsey added a second with 15 minutes to play, helping the Americans book a spot in the final on Sunday against either Brazil or South Africa.
The loss snaps Spain's record-tying 35-game unbeaten streak, and it is the first time the team has lost since November 15, 2006, which came in a friendly against Romania.
The Americans played a strong first 10 minutes as they pushed Spain back and created a good chance in the ninth minute with Dempsey firing just wide from the top of the box.
Spain's first good opportunity came in the 11th minute as Cesc Fabregas drove a low cross to Fernando Torres at the back post, only for the Liverpool striker to redirect the ball wide.
The European champions began to get the better of the play, but the Americans used a good build up midway through the half to take a surprising lead.
Dempsey chipped a short pass to Altidore 25 yards from goal, and he held off his defender and fired a shot from the top of the box that took a slight deflection off of the fingertips of goalkeeper Iker Casillas before settling inside the left post.
Spain could have answered minutes later when a fortunate bounce handed David Villa the ball inside the box, but he fired over from 12 yards.
Dempsey then missed a good opportunity to put the Americans up two goals when he headed Landon Donovan's free kick wide from close range, while goalkeeper Tim Howard allowed his side to take the lead into halftime as he made a good save on Torres at the near post.
Spain went on the attack to start the second half, with Villa forcing a diving stop from Howard while Albert Riera fired just wide.
The U.S. defense was sitting back and soaking up a lot of pressure from Spain, but the final ball continued to let the Spanish down with Villa shooting wide from 25 yards while Sergio Ramos had a shot stopped at the near post by Howard.
It looked like just a matter of time before Spain found the equalizer, but the Americans scored an extremely unlikely goal with 15 minutes to play to extend their lead.
Donovan got into the box on the right and tried a low cross that took a deflection off of a Spain defender and fell to Dempsey at the far post, leaving him with an easy finish from a few yards.
The play seemed to sum up the day for Spain, which controlled the match for long stretches of time but just couldn't find the final touch when it was needed.
The final 10 minutes saw Spain put everything forward, but even after Michael Bradley was sent off for a hard foul in the 86th minute, the U.S. defended bravely and held out for the win.
