Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Michael Vick tossed a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the
Atlanta Falcons to a 24-17 victory over the
New Orleans Saints.
Vick completed 11-of-23 passes for 160 yards and was intercepted once. He also gained 55 yards on the ground, as the Falcons completed the sweep of the two-game season series against the Saints.
"That's a great win for our football team," said Atlanta coach Dan Reeves. "To beat a great football team twice in one year is hard to do, believe me. I have the utmost respect for the Saints. They are a heck of a football team. They've got great balance in all areas. I thought they came in and did a really good job, and we had to earn the win."
Trevor Gaylor caught three passes for 100 yards and a touchdown for Atlanta (6-3-1). Warrick Dunn contributed 90 yards rushing to the winning effort, as the Falcons stretched their unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1).
New Orleans quarterback Aaron Brooks, Vick's older cousin, was 20-of-31 for 279 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Joe Horn had three catches for 134 yards and a touchdown for the Saints (7-3).
"They whipped us twice," Horn said. "They beat us. We are 0-and-2 against the Falcons. I'm a man. I can admit that."
Deuce McAllister was hampered by a sore ankle and managed only 43 yards on the ground for New Orleans, which was in search of its first 8-2 start since 1991.
"They did a pretty good job of stopping our offense," McAllister said. "They did a great job on me."
The Falcons marched into field goal range on the first possession of the game, but Jay Feely missed a 39-yarder wide left.
After a series of punts, Atlanta's offense took over at its own 30-yard line with 10:33 left in the second quarter. Vick gained three yards up the middle on the first play from scrimmage, but was sacked for a seven-yard loss on second down. Facing third-and-14, Vick connected with Gaylor on a 74-yard touchdown pass to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, New Orleans drove into Atlanta territory, before Brooks fumbled after being sacked by Sam Rogers. Keith Brooking recovered the ball at the Falcons' 34-yard line.
Late in the second period, Atlanta marched to the Saints' 29-yard line and had a second-and-eight. Vick was then picked off by Ken Irvin on the next play and the half eventually ended with the Falcons holding a seven-point advantage.
Atlanta increased the lead to 14-0 with 6:45 remaining in the third quarter, as Vick capped a 71-yard drive with a seven-yard TD run. Vick went around right end and stretched the ball just inside the pylon before being knocked out of bounds. The march was aided by a roughing-the-passer penalty against the Saints' Sedrick Hodge that gave the Falcons a first-and-goal at the six- yard line.
"We need to start calling him Houdini," said Gaylor. "He can find a way to get out of any situation. He's selling himself out to get us the win. He's not worried about getting hurt."
The Saints finally got on the board just over three minutes later courtesy of John Carney's 35-yard field goal. The key play of the march was a 63-yard pass from Brooks to Horn that gave New Orleans a first down at the Atlanta 11-yard line.
The Falcons got the three points back, as Feely nailed a 42-yard field goal to make it 17-3 with 14:18 left in the fourth quarter.
New Orleans responded 2:24 later with a 57-yard touchdown pass from Brooks to Horn. The Saints faced fourth-and-one at their own 43-yard line and elected to go for it. Brooks then fired a perfect pass over the middle to Horn, who eluded two defenders and scampered the rest of the way to the end zone.
After forcing a punt, New Orleans' offense took over at its own five-yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, Brooks was picked off by Juran Bolden, who returned the ball to the Saints' 29-yard line.
Following the turnover, Vick engineered an eight-play drive for a touchdown. On third-and-goal from the four, Vick found Alge Crumpler in the end zone to restore the 14-point advantage at 24-10 with 3:56 remaining.
The Saints again rallied. Brooks culminated an 11-play, 84-yard march with a 12-yard scoring pass to Donte' Stallworth, cutting the deficit to seven with only 47 seconds left.
New Orleans then tried an onside kick, but Crumpler fielded the ball cleanly and Atlanta proceeded to run out the clock.
