Minneapolis, MN (My Sportsbook) - The Minnesota Timberwolves have decided that head coach Kevin McHale will not be back next season. "I would like to thank Kevin McHale for his many years of service to the Timberwolves organization," said Wolves owner Glen Taylor. "When we hired David Kahn as our President of Basketball Operations, I gave him my full support to make an evaluation and decision regarding our coaching situation. I know that David made a careful analysis and this decision was made with the best interests of the Minnesota Timberwolves in mind." McHale took over bench duties for the fired Randy Wittman last season after a 4-15 start. He had previously served as vice president of basketball operations. The move marked his second stint as head coach having previously guided the Wolves to a record of 19-12 as interim coach for the final 31 games of the 2004-05 campaign. The Minnesota native had been with the organization since the 1993-94 season. He first served as a special assistant before moving into the assistant general manager's role the following year. He was originally appointed to the VP of basketball operations post on May 11, 1995. McHale played collegiately at the University of Minnesota and spent 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics, winning three NBA championships in the 1980s. The Timberwolves finished the 2008-09 season 24-58 and missed the playoffs for a fifth consecutive year. |
