Farragut, TN (My Sportsbook) - Tom Scherrer fired a seven-under 65 Thursday to grab a piece of the lead with the Knoxville Open suspended due to darkness.
Scherrer shared the clubhouse lead with David McKenzie, Mark Hensby and Tjaart van der Walt. Blake Adams is also minus-seven through 14 holes of the first round at Fox Den Country Club.
The round was delayed for three hours by thunderstorms then suspended for the night at 8:50 p.m. (et) due to darkness. The first round will resume Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. with the second round scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m.
David Morland IV, Scott Dunlap, Chris Baryla and Dustin White are tied for sixth place at minus-six, along with Brent Delahoussaye, who has completed 14 holes of his opening round.
Scherrer did his scoring in spurts with birdies on one and two. He moved to minus-four as he birdied the eighth and 10th, then jumped into a share of the lead with three straight birdies from the 14th.
"I'm happy with a 65 any day of the week," said Scherrer, a three-time winner on the Nationwide Tour. "There's a long way to go and I'm not thinking about my victory speech just yet."
McKenzie also did his scoring in spurts with back-to-back birdies from the second and again from the ninth. He closed with three straight birdies from the 16th.
Hensby, who is the only leader to card a bogey in the opening round, started on the 10th and birdied his first two holes. After a birdie on 14, he tripped to a bogey on the 16th to turn in minus-two.
The Australian eagled the par-five first, then carded three birdies in four holes from the fourth to end at minus-seven.
"I was a little surprised. I certainly didn't see it coming," said Hensby, also a three-time Nationwide Tour winner. "I'm not rusty playing, but I am rusty tournament-wise."
Van der Walt also started on the back nine and he drained four consecutive birdies from the 12th to jump up the leaderboard. He carded three birdies on the front side to share the lead.
Adams opened with an eagle on the first, then birdied three of the next four holes to jump to minus-five. He birdied the eighth before three pars in a row around the turn. Adam posted his final birdie on 12, then parred his next two before play was halted for the night.
Kevin Johnson, Alex Prugh and Jeff Gove, who are all in the top-10 on the Nationwide Tour money list, are among 16 players tied for 11th at five-under- par 67. Two of those 16 did not complete their rounds.
