Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - The United States, which lost Wednesday to Costa Rica 3-1, resumes FIFA World Cup qualifying Saturday against Honduras trying to extend an amazing 52-game home unbeaten streak against regional opponents.
The United States is 42-0-10 since a 3-2 loss to Honduras in 2001, and will try to bounce back from Wednesday's defeat and avoid another upset against Honduras at Soldier Field at 8 p.m. (ET).
The U.S. slipped to second in the final CONCACAF qualifying group following the loss in Costa Rica, but a win over Honduras will keep the team in good position to qualify for its sixth straight World Cup.
The Americans are 0-7-1 all-time in qualifying in Costa Rica but following each of the previous six losses, still qualified for the World Cup.
"Honduras is a talented team," U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu said. "We have a quick turnaround between the games, so we have to do what is necessary to be prepared and have a better result."
Since losing to Honduras in Washington, D.C. eight years ago, the Americans are 15-0-1 in home qualifying matches. Saturday's game is the third at home for the U.S. in 2010 qualifying, following shutout victories over Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago earlier this year.
The 14th-ranked Americans have a few concerns - in addition to the 35th-ranked Hondurans - with midfielder Michael Bradley suspended, and forward Brian Ching and defender Steve Cherundolo out injured.
The U.S. entered this stage of qualifying knowing Cherundolo would be out, but Ching missed Wednesday's match with a strained hamstring and will also sit out Saturday. Bradley's suspension takes another starter off the field.
Ching and his four World Cup qualifying goals will be replaced by Conor Casey. Casey currently leads MLS with eight goals for the Colorado Rapids.
Cherundolo was replaced by Marvell Wynne in the starting lineup on Wednesday, but veteran Frankie Hejduk could return from injury to regain the starting spot at right back he's had for most of the year with Cherundolo out.
Honduras, captained by Toronto FC midfielder Amado Guevara, is trying to reach its first World Cup since 1982. Honduras beat Mexico in its last qualifier, and is in third in the final qualifying group behind the U.S.
