Mitchellville, MD (My Sportsbook) - Cameron Percy fired an eight-under 64 Thursday and held the lead when rain halted play at the Melwood Prince George's County Open.
Heavy rain halted action in the middle of the first round. Play is scheduled to resume Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. (et), but more bad weather is in the forecast.
Officials hope to start the second round around 10:00 a.m. Friday. That will depend on the weather.
Leading money winner Michael Sim is alone in second place at six-under 66. Andre Stolz is one shot back at 67, as is Tom Scherrer, who is five-under through 12 holes.
Percy played the back nine first and opened with a bogey on No. 10 at The Country Club at Woodmore. He bounced right back with a birdie on the par-five 11th.
The Australian later birdied the 15th and 18th to make the turn in two-under. Around the turn, Percy birdied three and four to jump to minus-four.
Percy made an eagle on the par-five sixth, then dropped in back-to-back birdies efforts on eight and nine to close out his round.
"You had to try and work out how much [the ball] was going to spin off the slopes, so you really had to hit the ball past the hole today if you could and control how much it spun back," explained Percy of the soft conditions.
"I've been doing a lot of work with a sports psychologist back home and that's helped. I came over here with a pretty good attitude."
Sim carded five birdies in his first 11 holes to climb the leaderboard. After a birdie on 15, he stumbled to a bogey at 16. Sim got that shot right back with a birdie on 17.
If Sim can rally for the win, he would earn an automatic promotion to the PGA Tour for his third win of the season. He would be the ninth person to earn that promotion and would be by far the fastest one to do so.
D.J. Brigman and Brian Stuard are tied in fifth place at four-under 68. Todd Demsey (10 holes) and Bob Sowards (nine) are also at four-under. Nine more players are tied at minus-three, six of whom completed their opening rounds.
