San Jose, Costa Rica (My Sportsbook) - The United States men's national team resumes 2010 World Cup qualifying Wednesday night at Costa Rica, facing a big challenge on the turf at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa.
The U.S. flew to Costa Rica early to get its mandatory two days of practice on the artificial surface, and coach Bob Bradley hopes the team uses the two days wisely to adjust the field.
"I think for the most part the players will tell you that the game is not the same on artificial turf," said Bradley, who has led the club to a 3-0-1 record this year.
Wednesday's match will be the lone World Cup qualifier being held. The game was moved up from June 10 because the U.S. is participating in the Confederations Cup in South Africa later this month.
The Americans lead the final CONCACAF qualifying group through three games, but face their two closest competitors in a four-day span. The U.S. hosts Honduras on Saturday.
The U.S., 2-0-1 in qualifying, is the lone unbeaten in the final stage. Costa Rica is second thanks to wins over Honduras and El Salvador, while Honduras is in third.
The Americans have never won at Saprissa and would lose first in the group with a loss. A win by the U.S. would put the team in complete control to finish atop the final group, which places the top three teams automatically into the World Cup finals.
"They have great confidence there, and we are aware that we've never won there, so when we look at different challenges and talk about things that we still want to achieve, this is a good example," Bradley said.
"We feel very strongly that we have a great opportunity now to really finish the first half of this round and put ourselves in a good position as we go into the last five matches."
The Americans have a nearly full-strength roster in Costa Rica, with midfielder Maurice Edu and defender Frankie Hejduk the notable absences due to injury.
Following is the complete U.S. roster:
Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton).
Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Danny Califf (Midtjylland), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Oguchi Onyewu (Standard de Liege), Heath Pearce (Rostock), Jonathan Spector (West Ham), Marvell Wynne (Toronto FC).
