West Allis, WI (My Sportsbook) - Scott Dixon, the reigning IndyCar Series champion, passed Ryan Briscoe with 25 laps to go to capture Sunday's ABC Supply/A.J. Foyt 225 at The Milwaukee Mile. The No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi driver crossed the finish line 2.1257 seconds ahead of Briscoe.
The victory was Dixon's second of the season and 18th of his IndyCar career.
"What a long race. I'm just so happy to win at this place," Dixon said.
Following the last round of pit stops, Briscoe led Dixon, Dario Franchitti, Graham Rahal, and Raphael Matos to the restart on lap 172.
Briscoe, who won his first IndyCar Series race here last year, got stuck behind a slow Tomas Scheckter, who was a lap down. Dixon took advantage of the lap traffic and took the inside lane to make the race-winning pass with 25 laps to go.
Dixon quickly pulled away from the field and held nearly a three-second margin with 15 laps remaining. Briscoe, who led 154 laps, couldn't put a run together over the final laps, allowing Dixon to cruise into Victory Lane.
Franchitti, Rahal, and Danica Patrick rounded out the top-five.
Briscoe led the 21-car field to the green flag for 225 laps of racing. Briscoe allowed a faster Tony Kanaan to take over the first position early in the race, though.
Kanaan slowed down considerably on lap 26, allowing Briscoe to take the inside lane and pass Kanaan to regain the lead. Dixon also went flying past Kanaan, who fell to the ninth spot.
Briscoe was still showing the way when Mike Conway brought out the first caution on lap 57. Everybody came down pit road for their first stops of the day under the caution period.
The Indianapolis 500 winner, Helio Castroneves, had problems with his car in the pits, forcing him to have a very long stop. Castroneves, who crashed in qualifying and started 20th, finished three laps off the pace for a disappointing 11th-place finish.
After the stops, Briscoe led Dixon, Franchitti, Rahal, and Hideki Mutoh. That order remained relatively the same as Briscoe continued to dominate the race.
Dan Wheldon, who was running in ninth, started a round of green flag pits on lap 127. Kanaan's hopes of winning the race came to an abrupt end when his car caught on fire in the pits. Kanaan, who won back-to-back races at Milwaukee from 2006-07, finished 19th.
Franchitti was the new leader once the cycle of stops were complete. Briscoe, Dixon, Rahal, and Mutoh followed behind. But Briscoe and Dixon passed Franchitti on the inside lane on lap 154 to take over first and second, respectively.
Debris brought out the second and last caution flag of the afternoon on lap 160, sending the leaders down pit road for their final stops.
The win puts Dixon atop the standings with 161 points. Briscoe and Franchitti are tied for second with 157 points.
