West Allis, WI (My Sportsbook) - Ryan Briscoe captured the pole for the ABC Supply/A.J. Foyt 225 while his Penske Racing teammate Helio Castroneves, the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion, crashed during Saturday's qualifying at The Milwaukee Mile.
Briscoe, who won his first career IndyCar Series race at Milwaukee one year ago, set a new track qualifying record with a four-lap time of one minute, 26.7966 seconds (168.394 m.p.h.) for his first pole of the season and the fifth in series career.
"I knew when I was in front of (Graham) Rahal it was going to be good," Briscoe said. "I was a bit worried about my teammate (Helio Castroneves)."
Castroneves, a two-time pole winner at Milwaukee, bounced off the wall in turn two during his first qualifying lap. The Brazilian driver will start 20th. He enters the race just five points behind leader Dario Franchitti, who qualified eighth.
"We tried something different out there in qualifying from what we ran in practice," Castroneves said. "I just went for it, and the car wiggled a little bit. I thought I saved it, but unfortunately I ended up brushing the wall and couldn't qualify."
Castroneves started from the rear of the field in September 2008 at Chicagoland and last month at Kansas after his qualifying time was disallowed for running below the white line. He won the '08 season finale at Chicagoland and finished second to Scott Dixon at Kansas.
Graham Rahal will start on the outside pole at Milwaukee for the second year in a row after posting a time of 1:26.9392.
Both Briscoe and Rahal topped Marco Andretti's 2008 track qualifying record of 1:26.9591.
Tony Kanaan, who won back-to-back races at Milwaukee from 2006-07, qualified third. Kanaan continued to be sore after his crash midway through last Sunday's Indy 500.
Dixon, the defending series champion, was fourth. Mario Moraes completed the top-five.
Hideki Mutoh and Danica Patrick will start sixth and seventh, respectively, in Sunday's 225-mile race. Raphael Matos and Tomas Scheckter will roll off ninth and 10th.
Paul Tracy, a four-time winner at Milwaukee in the CART (Champ Car) Series, qualified 16th. Tracy is filling in for the injured Vitor Meira in the No.14 A.J. Foyt Racing car. Meira was released from the hospital after suffering two fractured vertebrae in his back during a horrifying crash late in the Indy 500.
