Indianapolis, IN (My Sportsbook) - Sixty-four teams with aspirations for Omaha and the College World Series now know their destination and regional opponents, as the NCAA Division I
baseball committee announced the tournament field on Monday for its annual championship.
The national top eight seeds are Texas (41-13-1), Cal State Fullerton (42-14), LSU (46-16), North Carolina (42-16), Arizona State (44-12), UC Irvine (43-13), Oklahoma (41-18) and Florida (39-20).
Fresno State opens its title defense against top-seeded UC Irvine.
The Southeastern Conference and Big 12 each boast eight teams in the field, followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference with seven. The Big West, Pac-10, Conference USA,Mountain West and Big Ten will each be represented by three teams.
The field is full of fresh faces, as 29 of the teams did not make the tournament last season. First-time participants include Binghamton, Cal Poly, Georgia State, Kansas State and Xavier.
The list of favorites, however, include powerhouses Miami-Florida and Florida State, making their 37th and 32nd straight appearances, respectively.
Each regional of four teams will play a double-elimination tournament. Regionals are scheduled from May 29 to June 1, with eight teams eventually advancing to the College World Series, which begins play on Saturday, June 13, at Rosenblatt Stadium.
