Indianapolis, IN (My Sportsbook) - Indianapolis 500 pole-sitter Helio Castroneves topped the speed charts in Friday's Carb Day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Castroneves, a two-time Indy 500 champion, circled the 2.5-mile oval at 223.920 m.p.h. (40.1929 seconds) during the final one-hour practice session for Sunday's 500-mile event. The Team Penske driver captured his third pole at Indy two weeks ago on Pole Day.
"Speed doesn't really mean a whole lot, it certainly helps," Castroneves said. "We're not over-confident, but we feel strong."
Castroneves' teammate Will Power was second quickest at 223.560 m.p.h. (40.2577 seconds). Power will start ninth in what could be his final IndyCar race of the year. He will drive the No.12 entry for Penske.
Power filled in for Castroneves during his six-week long federal tax evasion trial. Castroneves was acquitted and returned to racing in last month's event at Long Beach, CA.
KV Racing's Mario Moraes, who starts seventh, continues to be impressive at Indy this month as the Brazilian driver turned in the third fastest lap in the last practice.
"The team has done a great job this whole month," Moraes said. "We're pretty excited about the race."
Dan Wheldon from Panther Racing was fourth on the charts, followed by Ryan Briscoe, also from Penske.
Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon, the defending race winner, were sixth and seventh.
Graham Rahal from Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing, KV's Townsend Bell and Davey Hamilton from Dreyer and Reinbold Racing completed the top-10.
IndyCar star Danica Patrick from Andretti Green Racing came in 23rd.
Sunday's 93rd running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to start around 1:00 p.m. (et).
