Istanbul, Turkey (My Sportsbook) - Shakhtar Donetsk claimed its first European title on Wednesday as they downed Werder Bremen, 2-1 in extra time at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in the UEFA Cup final.
Luiz Adriano had Shakhtar ahead in the 25th minute before a Naldo free kick leveled the match 10 minutes later.
However, Jadson scored seven minutes into extra time after taking a pass from Darijo Srna and driving it first-time underneath goalkeeper Tim Wiese from 12 yards to help Shakhtar become the first ever Ukrainian side to win the UEFA Cup.
Bremen was bidding to win its first European Trophy since 1992, but they will now have to win the German DFB Pokal Cup later this month to return to European competition.
Shakhtar went on the attack to start the game and they nearly found a goal after only six minutes.
Some great ball movement in the build up allowed Jadson to slip a pass to Adriano at the top of the box, and after taking a touch, he fired wide of the left post.
Shakhtar enjoyed most of the possession in the first half but it was an innocent looking pass from Razvan Dinca Rat in the 25th minute that led to the opening goal.
Rat played the ball from midfield and it somehow made its way past three Bremen players to Adriano, who darted in behind the Bremen defense before chipping the ball past Wiese.
Adriano had another look at goal two minutes later when Willian picked him out on the left wing, but after cutting inside towards the top of the box, he blazed his shot over the net from 20 yards.
Bremen was unable to seriously test goalkeeper Andrei Pyatov, but a Naldo free kick from 30 yards allowed the German side to level the match.
Naldo's powerful drive was hit well but appeared to be too close to the keeper. However, Pyatov looked unsure over whether to catch the ball or parry it, and it instead hit off of his hands and found its way inside the left post.
It was a bad mistake from Pyatov, and he nearly let in a second goal five minutes later when he misjudged a right-wing cross from Clemens Fritz that sailed over his head but was nodded wide of the open net by Claudio Pizarro.
Wiese then produced a good stop on Mariusz Lewandowski's 25-yard blast to keep the teams level at the break, while he came up with another big stop on Jadson in the second half as he saved a 20-yard free kick at full stretch.
Pyatov then denied Bremen the winner with 12 minutes to play when he was forced to make a diving stop at the bottom left corner after a flicked header from Pizarro, sending the game into extra time.
It took the Ukrainian side seven minutes into the extra session to seize the lead as Srna got down the right wing and drove a low cross towards the penalty spot for Jadson.
He struck the ball first-time and it slipped underneath Wiese and rolled across the goal line, giving Shakhtar a 2-1 lead.
Willian could have added to the lead minutes later when he chipped a ball onto the roof of the net with Wiese well off his line, but the Shakhtar defense did enough to keep Bremen's attack under control.
The Germans spent most of the second extra time in the Shakhtar half of the field, but their best chance came with 10 minutes left as Alexis Tziolis sent a shot skipping past the right post from the top of the box.
