Baltimore, MD (My Sportsbook) - Leading three-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra led the entire way to capture Saturday's $1.1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. Finishing second was Kentucky Derby champ Mine That Bird with Musket Man finishing third in the 13 horse field.
Jockey Calvin Borel rode the filly to victory two weeks after guiding Mine That Bird to win the Run for the Roses. He was the first jockey to get off the Kentucky Derby winner to ride a different horse in the second jewel of racing's Triple Crown.
"Calvin knows her as well as anybody and has been a big part of her success in her works up to her races and her development in Hot Springs this winter," assistant trainer Scott Blasi said.
Rachel Alexandra, the first filly in the Preakness since 1999, is the first female to win the Preakness since Nellie Morse did so in 1924. Recently sold to Stonestreet Stables and Harold McCormick, Rachel Alexandra was the 9-5 post-time favorite and started from the far outside post.
The filly had an excellent start and quickly moved the lead followed by Big Drama, Friesan Fire and Pioneerof the Nile. Derby winner Mine That Bird, with Mike Smith in the saddle for the first time, was last as the field went up the backstretch.
Rachel Alexandra continued on the lead as the field entered the far turn with Big Drama still second, but as Kentucky Derby favorite Friesan Fire began to tire. The filly hit the top of the stretch with a clear lead with Mine That Bird mounting his charge from the back of the field.
Mine That Bird came charging down the stretch, passing Musket Man who was third in the Run for the Roses. The Derby champ, racing on the outside, ran out of room as Rachel Alexandra hit the wire one-length in front.
"When she left the gate, she kind of took a little bad step," Borel said. "Usually I just let the reins back on in and she just cruises. I had to reach and pick up about the quarter pole just to support her a little bit, but I think we could have went another round with her. She's got so much determination. When you look in the filly's eyes, it's unbelievable. You win."
Sent off as the 6-1 third choice, Mine That Bird was second followed by Musket Man, Flying Private, Big Drama, Papa Clem, Terrain, Luv Gov, General Quarters, Friesan Fire, second pick Pioneerof the Nile, Tone It Down and Take the Points.
The time for the 134th Preakness Stakes on a fast track was 1:55.08 for the 1 3/16 miles.
The result means there will be no Triple Crown winner again. Affirmed was the last to win to capture the Triple Crown in 1978.
Rachel Alexandra returned $5.60, $4.60 and $3.60. Mine That Bird paid $6.60 and $4.80, and Musket Man paid $5.00 to show.
Bought recently by Stonestreet Stables and Harold McCormick, Rachel Alexandra is perfect in her five starts this year and adds $710,000 to her earnings. The filly has won eight of 11 lifetime starts for $1,668,354.
The change in ownership brought Steve Asmussen aboard as the filly's new trainer. Asmussen won the 2007 Preakness with Curlin over Street Sense and Borel. This is Borel's first Preakness Stakes victory.
Rachel Alexandra was declared a 'Super' horse following her 20 1/4-length victory in the Kentucky Oaks, the day prior to the Kentucky Derby. This year she also won the Fantasy Stakes, Fair Grounds Oaks and Martha Washington Stakes.
For the Preakness the filly carried 121 pounds to the 126 pounds that the other 12 thoroughbreds toted.
A plane carrying Rachel Alexandra, along with Pioneerof the Nile and Terrain is due to land back at Louisville International Airport on Sunday morning.
The third leg of the Triple Crown is the $1 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 6.
